I drove to penticton from vancouver yesterday on the coquihalla. On the steepest part the van slowed to 60, and anytime I tried to accelerate I had a constant release of high pressure air,which I assume is the turbo blow off to release pressure. This lasted 10mins and it was fine the rest of the trip
My questions are:
1. Is this common on steep hills or why did it happen?
2. I assume its safer to hold back on the accelerator and not let it keep releasing? It was bad enough that if I kept trying to accelerate it would keep blowing out the air. It wasn't a small burst but long bursts. Is this bad?
Im confused why it only happened once (before or after the bear tunnel).
Also, what is a safe speed (for the engine) considering the posted speed is 120/hr? I was going 3000rpm at 115 -120 km/hr at the fastest. Most of the time I chugged along at 90-110km/hr

Check your linkage on the blowoff valve.
It should only open when boost pressure is too high for the engine. Weak spring, sticky linkage, bad seal...
Check the hose clamps on your intercooler hoses too.

Thanks, i will check the hose clamps first since I had the intercooler out when I replaced the radiator. Then I will look at the blow off valve linkage

is that EGR still connected? I know you were asking for blanking plate sdimensions. A faulty EGR makes the engine lose power, puff loads of black smoke and generally makes the engine like poop cuz the thing opens too soon...weak spring.
If you pull the vaccuum line to the EGR and plug it with a machine screw this will at least prevent the EGR from opening. THis might help you in the short term. Worked for me...thought I popped my turbo when it belched black smoke on the Coq' just outa Kamloops.
WHile a blanking plate is the cheapest fix....I really don't like it when stuff isn't working as designed so I am gonna replace my EGR to help get the post turbo exhaust temps down faster during deceleration.
This also helps cut the black smoke on acceleration..or at least it did when it worked properly.

The EGR was already removed when I bought the van, and I want to install an EGTgauge. the current plates are rusted out so I hope to get a new plate and drill and tap it for the EGT probe. Are you buying a brand new EGR valve or are you going to rebuild yours (if possible)?
I studied some diagrams last night so I am going to investigate the release valve tonight to check its operation
