(UPDATED) Installing new gauges in L400 center dash pod.

Post by Big-Bird »

My L400 didn't have the center gauge pod as a stock item so I bought a used one to install aftermarket gauges to monitor important engine vitals.

After removing the stock instruments I cut the back of the instrument panel off with a dremel. Then I installed Autometer gauges: 2 1/16" Pryometer and Voltmeter and a 2 5/8 Boost gauge. I did need to sandpaper the middle hole a little as the boost gauge was a bit bigger. After about an hour of cutting and sanding I had all 3 installed. Another 20 minutes and the lights were soldered with quick connects. The signal wires and boost line will get installed a bit later.

The fun began this weekend and I managed to connect 2 of the 3 instruments. (Pyro still needs sensor install)

Picked up an assortement of brass fittings because they are better than plastic and not prone to heat damage.

First I drilled hole in the firewall just above the steering shaft, installed a rubber grommet and fed the pressure line through.

With the air box partially removed you get clean access to the 1/4" line coming off the turbo to the Injector Pump.

The assembled brass tied off to the wire loom.

I opted for and AUTOMETER 2-5/8" pressure gauge (P/N 4404). Fits in the center hole nicley with only minor clearancing.

Fed the line and wires to the center console mounting point.

The pod looks nice with its new shiny gauges, and they are lit with green gels on the bulbs, just like stock.

TESTING...

Nope, the pics were on the host site and the site is gone now. No time to retake the pics as I am on other projects now.
