Wheel Modifications

Post by Big-Bird »

Bought a set of 15x8 steel wheels from a Toyota 4-Runner. The center hole wasn't big enough to fit over the axle stub and 4WD hubs so dropped them off at a local wheel repair shop for a little machining.

108.5mm hole is needed to clear the L400's hubs. These are just under 106.

Nissan has a nice basic black center cap that locks in against the wheel nuts. Wreckers have these for 2-3$ each. Silver caps are also available from the early model Xterra. (New $20 each)

once the wheels are done they are getting some winter tires. Will post when done.

purchase used Toyota 6-bolt 15x8 steel rims (Check)
get the center hole in each rim opened to 108.5mm(Check)
fender flares repaired, prepped and painted black. (Check)
Find used Nissan plastic center caps for steel rims (Check)
Front hubs were way too big for the Nissan 4WD caps...(dam!) Discovered a 4" ABS plumbing adaptor that will work (Check.....Watch for the modifications)
Massaged front inner fender well at the mud flap for 31" tire clearance (Check..rubber hammer!)
Mount 31's all around and go for test drive. (Check and its really quiet...weird but true.)

need to get some aftermarket mud flaps before full winter hits.

Pictures or it didn't happen :-)
Nothing says "poor workmanship" more than wrinkles in the duct tape.

One to whet the appetite....it was too dark to get a good photo when I was done last night. The change from 30's to 31's is long overdue.

The plumbing parts (which will be the front wheel caps) are not modified yet. Need to dremel the flange and the inner lip in 6 spots each to fit around the 6 wheel studs and the 6 hub flange bolts.
