Sunroof stuck slightly open
Hi guys,
I have a 1996 l400 S1 super exceed. I can't get it to close the last 2-3mm on the drivers side. It is letting in a bit of water and I can't figure out how to get it to close.
I have tried manually closing it with the hex key but it only closes fully on the left then starts jumping cogs as I keep cranking.
Any ideas how to shift it forward a little more on the drivers side?
I have tried reading the shoppe manual to see how to adjust the sunroof but I think my sunroof is different as I don't have a "decoration cover" to remove and can't seem to access any components of the sunroof without removing the whole front headliner.
Cheers

You could remove the cog and flip it over. Part of the problem is that the teeth strip on one side of the gear.

This thread was a huge help for me when I had the same problem:

Pulled my motor and flipped cog, motor working great now, no clicking but I still have about a 2mm gap on the driver's side. Any other ideas??

My best guess is that you might need to tug on the cable on that side to get it aligned better, might be out of alignment with the other side.
Don't know that for sure, it is just a guess.

Re: Sunroof stuck slightly open
Tried tugging on the cable, tried it while the sunroof was closed and it wouldn't budge. Tried it when the sunroof was half open and it made the motor out of sync. It seems like it is out of alignment or something is stopping the sunroof on the right from closing fully. It is literally open 1-2mm on the right. Just enough for some water to leek.
Is this a big deal? I know there are drains in there so short term no big deal but I'm worried about long term.
Anybody out there have any ideas on how to fix the alignment of the sunroof?

Re: Sunroof stuck slightly open
Thanks a ton for all the tips. It sounds like I have to take my sunroof apart. The problem is mine looks different then the one in the shoppe Manual. I don't have a decoration cover and can't access anything from the side. All the screws and bolts look to be under the headliner or too deep in the sunroof to access with a standard screw driver.
Do you have any suggestions on where to start?
Will I have to take my whole headliner down to access the bolts for the sunroof?

Re: Sunroof stuck slightly open
There is a huge thread on the UK forum about sunroofs - it might help as it discusses the roof being out of alignment, which I think you have:

Re: Sunroof stuck slightly open
Got it FINALLY!!
The problem was that I couldn't figure out what the decoration cover was. For anybody else like me it is not on the rails for the sunroof it is the plastic bit on the sunroof glass.
Once I got those off I loosened the bolts, adjusted the glass to fix the alignment.
Resync the motor.
Fixed, fully functional sunroof. Bonus is I flipped the cog so now everything is working well.
The cables are a little worn so if things fall apart again I may have to replace my cables :(

Good on you for fixing it!
I fixed mine a while back, but now I don't open it anymore as I don't want to go through repairing a jammed roof again!
