Cheap Chinese Lights and Winnipeg Winters

Just finished what should have been a very quick swap of DRLs. Nothing fancy, just the little 6" LED bars that Mardy puts on. But, because of the cheapness of the units, it turned into an hour and 45 minutes (in -14) of stripping wires, losing bits that just fell off, finding them in the snow (or not), and MacGyvering everything back together. Then, after testing them at every step of the process to ensure I wasn't wasting my time, I turn the key to find that one doesn't work.

So, anyone got any cool ideas for DRLs?
I'm thinking either these (from MDOCUK):

I like the Halo effect and there are some simple tutorials (You-Tube) that show you how to make your own with acrylic rods, stainless steel jewelry wire, some bright LEDs and wiring skills.

I was considering this mod myself but haven't had a need to soften the adhesive that holds the headlight glass in place....my lenses are still good.

the little vents on the front bumper where the small lights reside in the photo you posted are good for a 2" driving light and there are some good deals on Aliexpress, Ebay.

Does anyone know the legality here in Canada of the blue ones he's got? I'm not sure if I would want white or coloured, but if one is illegal, it sure makes the decision-making process a lot faster.

headlights must be white (or off-white) and can have a color temperature in the almost blue (ultra-white) like HID when driving....any other colors will attract a ticket.

bit there are halos that can strobe to different colors which are fine when parked (for show and off-road purposes.

Thanks for the head's up. I think white would still look pretty slick. I may still do it at some point. However, after pricing out both options this weekend and considering the workload of each job, I ordered the little halo units that go in the bumper. On a boat from Hong Kong as we speak...

There are a bunch of different options like this, some of which specify aluminum body/glass lens, and some which look identical, but do not specify that they are not plastic. I was a little gun-shy after the last fiasco, so I paid more for the ones that stated it outright.

I'm hoping these are of some quality. I'll let you know what I find out when they arrive!!

Update!!

Halos arrived yesterday. They feel nice and beefy and look gawgeous!
Now to wait until I have:
a) time to install them (including the issues that will inevitably come up), and
b) temps that won't freeze me wee digits off while I do it.

If they look as good on the Deli as they do in the box, look out world!!
