Neutral range selector

Hello, well my neutral range selector fired.
Has anyone needed to order this part before? I can't seem to do better than $500 and a wait of 2 weeks since it's direct from Japan -appreciate any input.

I'm not familiar with the term "neutral range selector", but I think you mean what Mitsubishi call the Neutral Inhibitor Switch. The thing that prevents the starter from operating if you're in anything but Neutral or Park, right?

Amayama.com list it for only(!) CD$230 (plus shipping). Part number is MD730446 I believe.

(If it were my van I'd just bypass the switch. You can't remove the key if the van is in anything but Park or Neutral, so you can't leave it in Drive accidentally, and if you're dumb enough to move it to Drive before starting the engine then you're illustrating Darwin's law.)

Wow thanks for all the info. Unfortunately I already gave my guy the go ahead. Looks like I am paying almost double for this part then I need to.

If you are someone like me and have limited mechanical understanding, would you always hold off on the repair and order the part yourself? I feel like most garages would be opposed to this.

Our vans are 25 years old and have many parts that can go wrong. I think your mechanical understanding will improve very quickly, or else your bank balance will suffer.

I would always try and find the part myself, at least so I know what price it should be. If a garage was opposed to me buying my own parts, I would wonder if they were trying to rip me off with their own parts prices.

This forum is a great resource too, it can't hurt to ask if anyone has advice before going ahead with repairs.

That said, if i had limited mechanical knowledge, and the repair had a warranty, then I might be tempted to just let the garage do all the work. Easier than accidentally ordering the wrong part!
