I'm finding it very difficult to find earlier motor oil which is better suited for the older 4D56T. I did manage to find CI-4 rated oil, but I think even that will become harder to source.
I'm thinking I'll have to switch to CJ-4 at some point, maybe synthetic... If you've made the switch, what modifications to the maintenance schedule have you made? Have there been any negatives after a lot of miles?
Have you switched to modern CJ motor oil?

I run it... still change the oil ever 5k... I have wiped a cam shaft though. Who knows if it was oil related though. I Suppose time will tell. I do add friction modifier now (NitroX)

There are as many opinions as there are vans out there. I work in the heavy equipment field and there is a lot of old diesel engines out there running just fine on modern engine oil. I changed mine from Shell Rotella 15w40 (no oil consumption) to Shell Rotella T6 0W40 (I noticed some oil consumption). I live in Manitoba. I plan on trying a different brand and weight for the next oil change.

I have been using Motomaster (Canadian Tire) brand 15w40 synthetic. I haven't noticed any oil consumption and it is inexpensive. I parked the truck this winter keep it safe from the salt so I haven't had much low temperature starting drama. Ralph in Winnipeg.
