A question about a connection

Does your Mitsubishi L300 make a strange noise? Need wheel alignment specs?

A question about a connection

Post by joebillhill »

So during my routine fluids and engine bay check this morning I noticed a disconnected wire displayed below.

It goes into a wire bundle that has one shoot out and connect to the little nipple thing near the throttle linkage on the injector pump. Another wire comes out of that bundle and goes to my coolant temperature sensor on the cylinder head. The rest of the bundle goes up past the radiator toward the front of the van and out of view.
The female plastic casing is broken and it was tucked out of sight so I imagine I've been running with it disconnected for some time. So I was curious what this connection is for and what will happen when I reconnect it?
Thanks,
Joe

That's a fusible link connection. The thick black wire runs forward, past the radiator, under the floor, and comes back into the cab with your aircon pipes. It runs the aircon condenser fans (under the left step and the one in front of the radiator) and powers the magnetic clutch on the AC compressor. When you plug it in your AC should work. Or explode. Depends why it's unplugged I guess.

The other side of the connector goes through a short length of wire -the fusible link- which is sheathed in fibreglass tube (it's designed to be the weak link and act like a fuse if something goes horribly wrong) and from there to the battery, though it shares the loom with a bunch of other stuff so it's difficult to tell where it goes just by looking.

Also made me laugh. Especially since I started at that for a long time on a forest road thinking "Nothing can go wrong, can it?"
Tough to tell if it's making my AC work since it's been cold but it hasn't blown up yet so that's good!

I can't recall if I reconnected that thingy before or after, but my AC DID explode. Pulleys, belts, bolts bouncing around in a huge cacophony of strange noises. Luckily no collateral damage and we just removed the offending parts since I don't plan on refurbishing the AC.

On a side note I wonder about that plug which in your picture has blue tape? This connector is also not attached anywheres on mine and filled with white corrosion . . . wondering where it could go? I don't see anything else in the battery bay to plug it in .. missing aftermarket accessory mayhaps?

That 3-pin socket is a mystery to me as well. It's in the same place on my Deli, and it's never had anything plugged into it either.

It might be used on the petrol-engined models?
