Colt did me a real solid for me on this one and has asked that I keep the specs under raps for the time being. Can always ship a cam over to you though

Shoe,
It's very promising to hear about your positive findings with the custom shaft. I'm a bystander when it comes to engine mods. I'm not after making my van into a raging dragster but, I am interested in giving it some reasonable kick. As we all know keeping up with traffic is usually the best you can hope for in these vans. I've just opened up the exhaust to 2.5" and plan on trying a frozenboost intercooler next. My question to you and the resident engine experts is, will going to this custom shaft compromise the longterm life of my engine? Is there a risk to installing an aftermarket cam shaft? Was/is it a worthy upgrade that has put a smile on your face while driving the van?
Regards

no there is no reason the cam would lessen the engines life. Basically what the profile does is move the power band from way down low in the rpm range to higher up. Meaning that criusing speed is in the cams power range. The only thing you do need to know is if your head has ever been decked. This cam cannot be used a head that has been shaved. As for am i happy? Very much so, the van pulls much smoother and is much more at home on the freeway. Ita still no rocket but its a good step in the right direction.

I think many of us that are no mechanical, would want to know how much arm juice (in hours
) is needed for replacing that shaft ? Any idea as for the price of the shaft itself ?

LOL! Cam grinders are like that, and fair enough too. It's probably better for me to work with my cam grinder, that way we can tweak the cam to suit my engine (and I can go back if it's not right).TieMyShoe wrote: Colt did me a real solid for me on this one and has asked that I keep the specs under raps for the time being. if you are not mechanically inclined i would recommend having somebody install the cam for you. It took me about an hour and half to do it in my garage. Pricing would likely be about 250 plus your core.

So you confirm you can run faster (or have more power) and have less heat (lower EGT temperature) ?TieMyShoe wrote:If anybody is interested I have taken this modification a little bit further. My van is running upped boost and a tweaked MFIP however I still found the van lacked on the freeway and the EGTs were to high. Working with Colt Cams we have come up with a street grind for the 4D56T which I have now been testing in my van for the past 6 months. The new profile allows more in air into the engine and allows it to escape faster than the stock camshaft. It is ground for mid to high range performance which means on the freeway at cruising speed my van no longer feels like it has a hit a brick wall. Hill climbing is much more stable and the van no longer bogs down to a crawl as it falls off its power band.
Up next will be a bottom mount exhaust manifold in hopes of eliminating the terrible 90/180 bends the exhaust must travel through, Garret T2 turbo and an inter-cooler. If anybody is interested in giving one the cam shafts a go please feel free to contact me. Prices will require a core in return so I can get more made. Not looking to cash in on this, just help out the L300 crowd so we can keep up with traffic..

I can confirm my vehicle responded well to the new cam. Power band is much more usable and keeps speeds from dropping nearly as drastically. As for EGTs I can only confirm that the black smoke emissions have dropped, unfortunately my EGT gauge is in-op so I cannot confirm with numbers. I'm installing a new ISPRO gauge this week so I will be able to make confirmation then,

Just did this mod, but now it feels very unresponsive starting from a dead stop, which may be worsened when it is cold. Like I can put my foot to the floor and nothing happens until is slowly gets to higher rpm/boost. When moving, everything seems ok/slightly better power.
Did i mess up an accelerator adjustment/idle adjustment in doing this or is this supposed to happen?

I'm guessing the sluggishness on takeoff doesn't come with extra black smoke?
The Galium Mod includes winding the spring seat half a turn anticlockwise (http://www.chez-galium.com/automobile.p ... main_frame) which always seems a bit odd to me- that'll put more pressure on the spring, meaning your engine won't inject extra fuel until the boost is higher (which sounds like the trouble you're having).
Try returning the notched wheel to its original position. This should restore your acceleration, but you'll still have more fuel at the top end thanks to removing the nylon spacer. Just watch your EGTs.
The other (rather important) thing that's left out of that how-to is that the diaphragm must be replaced in the same orientation. Rotating the diaphragm changes how much fuel is injected. if you think yours isn't in the same orientation, it's a good idea to remove it again and look at the eccentric cone- there will be a large wear mark on the cone, replace the diaphragm so the wear mark faces forwards (towards front of vehicle) and it'll be back to stock.

No black smoke when I was trying to takeoff..
I turned the wheel back and it feels good again. EGT's climb a bit higher now but I think my 2.5 inch exhaust offsets it.
I thought I would be able to see the wear marks you mentioned when I did it again, but I could not find anything. I did see a bit of discolouration on the botton of the metal pin and oriented that and the oblong part of the pin forwards though. I did not have my phone on me when I did it so I did a terrible sketch of what I'm talking about. I also have no idea if this is the correct orientation but at least the problem has been corrected.
Thanks Growler! I think I owe you a pack of pineapple lumps next time i'm in NZ (my gf is a kiwi).

My description was a bit vague. Wear mark should look like this (only without the grease, if you're lucky):
Pineapple lumps are awesome (of course) but bourbon and L&P is better.

This is a governor mod. The easiest on the ve pump. But turning the serrated wheel isn't necessary. The governor pin has two sides aggressive and calm. There are lots of breakdowns if you look up XUD9TE Bosch VE pump modification. The nylon washer acts as an emissions limit and is usually the first thing to go. Looking at the picture earlier of wear marks. You can see the pin has an off set base this is the best indication of the aggression. The delivery is simple when boost starts the diaphragm is depressed a pin follows the line of the governor, this allows more fuel depending on the amount of boost. And of course more fuel=more boost... until the limit what that may be (turbo, max fuel allowance, engine...) any ways from my experience working with the 1.9 xud Peugeot engines there is plenty of potential from indirect injection engines, I ran double stock hp for nearly 2 years before I had any issues with reliability.

Also if you find that you are huffing black smoke at low rpm under load your fuel air ratio is off, so basically back the fuel off a little. The most efficient IDI tuned engines will inevitably give some smoke but for the purpose of this clean burn is best. Besides the subject would engulf this thread if u started about the follow up from these mods.
