Can't start L300 (SJ3M99) after fuel pump replaced :/

Does your Mitsubishi L300 make a strange noise? Need wheel alignment specs?

Can't start L300 (SJ3M99) after fuel pump replaced :/

Post by niche »

Hullo all,
This is my first post and bit awkward as I most often manage to do my
own service repairs as I'm an electronic engineer (but maybe getting old)
My kids really wanted a Delica with the sun roof & all the fruit - which we still
might get once projects are over as we love camping in south west Western Australia.

Vehicle: Mitsubishi Express SJ (L300) 1997 with petrol 4G64 motor which has
been fine for ~ 2 years bought from secondhand, parked it undercover & didn't
touch it for 8 months still with ~ 20L of fuel though with dying battery...

Sequence of events:-

1. Got new battery, checked fuel level ok, wouldn't start :/
2. We have spark so sprayed some degreaser to intake & it ran ok, suggesting no fuel flow (pump or relay) or bad fuel...
3. Fed 12v direct to fuel pump & no noise with low current draw - shows it failed.
4. Removed tank & pump & yep pump corroded as was wiper on the sender.
5. Replaced fuel pump, pressure tested. Replaced sender wiper all back in place & refreshed fuel.
6. But, wouldn't start - found no 12v drive to fuel pump & no spark either :/
7. Checked all fuses, checked whatever relays we could get access to all fine.

It seems as if the ECU either failed or is not getting power can't yet find out why :/

So we've gone down the track with the wiring diagram we managed to find from Growlerbearnz
mainly supplement 1997 electrical wiring
thanks http://www.delica.ca/forum/memberlist.p ... ile&u=4888

However, we can't get to the ECU to check power at its terminals i think its behind the
seat belt drivers side or a bit below, hope to get to in next day or so

Is there anything useful in other chapters of the googledrive upload by Growlerbearnz
thats not uploaded - like ECU diagnostics & fault codes it would be a great help.
If I do get to the ECU & there are leds, I'll re-wire them somewhere to check. I used to do that
on the VL commodore ECU along with ECU repairs so am a dab hand with microelectronics...

In the meantime, I wonder if anyone has a similar issue arise, its weird, must be
a simple wire break or fuse issue somewhere but, getting to things seems tortuous,
hoping to save time & aggravation if anyone has any tips along these lines or seen
something like this before ?

Thanks guys,

Everything I have is in that upload. I'm not familiar with petrol engined L300s either, but it sounds like you're on the right track.
Nothing says "poor workmanship" more than wrinkles in the duct tape.
