Roof rack, awnings, and roof-top tents
Was reading an article in Alberta CAA's magazine about the Mongol Rally, and mention was made of the Canadian team's Impi roof-top tent on a Geo Metro. Okay, any roof-top tent that can mount on a Metro (and on a Mini), I've gotta see. Well, I went googling, and found they are made by Hannibal Safari Equipment of South Africa. But they have a Canadian presence.
They make a couple of roof-top tents, as well as racks and awnings. I really like what I see. I was planning on having a custom rack made, and design my own awning, but I might not have to.
Here's their photo of the Impi on a Mini: There aren't an prices given, and I suspect the stuff ain't cheap, but there has been enough discussion on the topic to bring this company to everyone's attention.

Nice gear. I'd like to see the price on their awnings, I like the design.

There's an Edmonton retailer http://www.gcec.info that is unfortunately going out of business. They don't give a price for the awning, but the Impi tent is $2000, and the other tent is about $1500. Ouch! But they sure sound like good quality.Adam wrote:Nice gear. I'd like to see the price on their awnings, I like the design.

One of my co-workers is presently spending the winter in Baja with one of these mounted on their RHD Land Cruiser:

Apparently they can be purchased in Kelowna from Okanagan Autohome. http://okanaganautohome.com/maggiolina.php

I actually have a roof top tent with ladder and everything. But not likely to mount it on my delica because the van is tall already and tons of room inside.

Much as I like the Hannibal awning, price made me go with the Shady boy awning instead. http://www.shadyboy.com/vans/ or http://www.vanagon.com/info/accessories/shady_boy/ About $400 instead of about $1000.Erebus wrote:They make a couple of roof-top tents, as well as racks and awnings. I also got a ShadyBoy awning, mostly due to pricing.
As for a rooftop tent: I'm looking for one as well. Does anyone know a Hannibal dealer in Canada? The main site only lists the dealer in South Africa, and I'm afraid the shipping will be a little much for what I'm willing to spend.

How does everyone like their shadyboy awnings? I want to put one on my Deli, it looks pretty lightweight and suitable.

I really like mine. Haven't used it a huge amount, but it has been useful. One thing I like is that it is free-standing, so you can move the vehicle around after awning is up. But it does have optional vertical poles, which I got. That helps it withstand higher winds. I wouldn't recommend having it up in high winds, but that would apply to all awnings.Roodman wrote:How does everyone like their shadyboy awnings? Here is my awning in action, Originally, I was parked under the trees. Then everyone started talking about rigging up a tarp to cover the picnic table. I suggested I just move the Deli and put up the awning. Much easier. Worked great.
And here it is in Watson Lake, Yukon:

I really like that design and I would like to get one for my Land Cruiser as well. Fortunately, the outfit that sells them will only be a short distance from kelowna vacation rentals, where I'll be visiting this Spring. I'll have to check them out. Normally I like to camp but my girlfriend has convinced me to go a bit upscale on our next trip. I definitely want to get back to camping again and more touring of the countryside though.
