rough cold start
hi guys, do you know why I my cold start are rough like that? A lot of white smoke with misfire. By cold start I mean cold engine, not freezing outside temp.
fuel pump was leaking, so a diesel fuel pump shop put a complete new seal kit.
the pump is not leaking anymore but I now have this problem. it does feel like a glow plug problem too, because it start and run like a charm once it is hot. It start like shit once it as sits for a few hours...
I test the glow plug and they look goog. less than 1 ohm each. there is 10v on the glow plug rail between the 2 relay click. and the relay timer appears to be good. there is like 4 seconds between the 2 click.
10v ? is this enough?
let me know what you think

I agree, it does sound (and look) like a glow plug problem.
The only sure way to test the glow plugs is to remove each one and apply 12V to it, and see if it glows. When testing resistance, each one should be 0.5ohm at 20C, but such low resistance is difficult to measure accurately and can change when the glow plug warms up.
10V is correct, but may be slightly high. It's usually closer to 9V. (The battery is putting out 12V, but the high current draw from the glow plugs causes it to drop to 9V)
It might also be a sticky or clogged injector, but it would be odd for it to be so reliably faulty only when cold. I'd confirm each glow plug with a glow test first.

Nothing says "poor workmanship" more than wrinkles in the duct tape.

If you could update your profile that would be great; it's useful to know if we're talking about an L300 or L400, Exceed, Super Exceed, or Van. I would hate to give wrong advice because I thought we were talking about a different vehicle. (Yours looks like a 1993 L300 Super Exceed, if that helps).

HI! Before I crank out a new thread, thought i'd 'zombie' this one. :)
Did this work? I'm guessing by the lack of replies that it might have. I am experiencing the same/similar issue. Only when cold, lots of white, bad misfiring. Just completed the EGR delete and brand new injector nozzles. Reduced the smoke quite a bit, but still has a bad stumble when cold. I guess I should chuck in some known good glow plugs. :)

Maybe it’s loosing its prime? Check that all the fuel lines are tight.

I guess the white smoke would be unburnt fuel. I would definitely change glow plugs. They are expensive but worth it!

Check rockauto.com for plugs. Very good prices, $20/plug. I think I paid.
Is your Deli an L300? Mine are NGK 2161, which are the 6v ones.

(The voltage is stamped on the plugs. You should be able to read it without removing them...)

Hey, thanks. Good tip on plugs. I have a known good set so I'll give them a try tomorrow. Cheers!
