SPEED WARNING CHIME

Does your Mitsubishi L300 make a strange noise? Need wheel alignment specs?

I think you've got your aerodynamics backwards, and instead of it being lift which is making the vehicle 'light in the nose' during cornering it is more than likely inertia and centrifugal force. I don't believe there is enough of a difference in the shape of Delica top-from-bottom (after the leading edge which is comprised of the nose) to produce a wing-like structure which would produce enough lift to lighten the front end.

My original post / question was related to long term cruising at 3000 RPM or thereabouts - which translates to about 120km on my Deli. I find mine runs quite comfortably at 110-120 since I put new shocks on - prior to that, I would find cornering at that speed slightly uncomfortable. I do the Coqu regularly (4-5 times per year) and don't wish to damage my Exceedus Maximus. I do my best to keep the RPM at or below 3000 with the occasional bump to 3500 when gearing down - but then let it settle back to 3000 on the long uphills. So, the question is - with the redline at 4500 - in my mechanically challenged mind, I'm running at 66% of the max RPM - is that a comfortable place to be for this motor for long term cruising?. Most gassers I've driven would turn about 2500-3000 on a 6000 RPM Redline - or less than 50% the max RPM. Maybe I'm looking at this all wrong - but just hoping someone more mechanically inclined and familiar with diesel specifically could offer their opinion.

Perhaps you should invest in a front end spoiler, but let's face it ~ these ships are built like aeroplanes ~ after all Mitsubishi brought us the A-6 Zero, amongst others.

Mine only chimes when I have her in reverse... do you think I should see a doctor?

There are now two seperate issues in this thread: Speed warning chime and Delica aerodynamics. I have some very good info on both of these issues...but unfortunatley I have drunk far too much tonight to comment on either!!

I'll be back tomorrow in a more able state to address both of these issues, but in the meantime, rest well and don't drive too fast! 8-)

I lived in Japan for 5 years. The speed warning chime is to let you know that you are speeding. The max speed in Japan being 80km/h.My experience was that it was put on all kinds of vehicles. If you can find it,just tear it out.It serves no other purpose.

I'm afraid I can't find any more info than this about the speed warning chime!! I have spent literally HOURS trying to see if there is any more infomation in my 'collection' but to no avail!

It looks like there is a switch/sensor in the back of the speedo housing that can be disconnected to prevent the chime form occurring? The only thing I can't find is; does this switch affect anything else like the speedo itself?

I do not accept responsibility for any broken speedo's out there.....I am simply relaying the only data I can find on the subject.

I hope it is of some help to you?

Bruce.

P.S. I have just noticed that I made an error in the 2nd diagram and placed the arrows incorrectly (they must have moved as I cropped the image down!!)

The two terminals you need are the ones about 1cm below the arrows. Sorry about that.....

This should probably be a different thread, but now that we've got the instrument cluster pulled out of the dash: how many bulbs in there (for night-driving illumination)? I was thinking of changing the colour (possibly red or orange), and was wondering how many I'd need.

Just to answer/clarify things a bit more, I pulled my speedo apart today to have a look for some evidence of this speed warning chime! Found nothing, but here are some pics that may help some of you:

Circled in RED - these are the definite terminals as referred to above. As you can see - no form of speed chime is present on this speedo unit...

As you can see in the above photo (cirlced in GREEN) there are six bulbs that provide night time illumination.
mararmeisto wrote:I was thinking of changing the colour (possibly red or orange)
Each of the bulbs pulls out from the bulb holder for easy replacement - and each one is covered with a little green condom. Removing these would make your illumination whiter, but in order to get a proper colour change, you will need to replace the bulbs with LED's which give a much more crisp light. Changing the condoms to a different colour won't help that much because the dials themselves have a green tint to them and only LED light will have the sharpness to cut through this green tint (hopefully that makes sense?)
Image

You can buy capless LED bulbs in a variety of colours that should just plug straight into the bulb holders. Cheap off eBay and an easy job to do....

While I had the speedo apart, I literally pulled it apart in order to see if the speed chime was hidden anywhere else:
Image

The speedo unit itself had no evidence of any kind of chime and I can only assume that any chime that 'could' have been fitted has been completely removed.
Image
Image

If someone WITH a speed chime is willing to pull their speedo pod out of the vehicle and send me some photos of the back part (like shown above) then I can probably tell you what needs removing and how to d remove it....(should be quite straight forward anyway?)

Have a look HERE to see a simple guide on how to remove the speedo unit....
