Installed Cruise Control

Post by robinimpey »

Okay here it is. I looked around on all the Delica sites and was not able to find anything that was very helpful when it came to installing cruise control, other than it has been done, so here's what I did.

Picked up a Audiovox CCS 100 for $87.00 on eBay.

Installation wasn't too bad, but if you're going to do it allow yourself several hours.

Here it is.

One magnet wired to the drive shaft and the sensor mounted above it so it is well protected. Only needed to make a slight modification to the original sensor bracket to make it work.

Wiring is better looking now, this was still the experimental stage getting everything working. (Don't want Green1 giving me grief over a sloppy install! ;-) Ran the lines around the engine compartment and to the servo and then on to the power supply. You can also see in this picture the position of the servo cable. Just sneaks past the fuel filter and makes a loop back and then up to the servo.

Here is the servo mounted to the side of the fan shroud. vacuum hose goes under the rad hose and across the the other side. Controller wires go back and up under the console. Power wires go forward and up between the two shifters then under the carpet to the dash. Speed sensor wire go down and is tied to places where it will stay protected.

I mounted the controller right behind the shifter. Easy access and easy to see. Cabling is routed under the console and enters the engine compartment close to the hinge at the back. The cabling you can see between the shifters are the lines going to the brake pedal, park lights and power.

Nice install!
Thanks for attaching all those pictures, makes life much easier if we want to tackle this project.

Does it work like you expected it and how long did it take you? And any reason for choosing this particular kit?
Now go get lost on some highway! :-D

The reason for this kit was twofold. 1. Inexpensive 2. Had the dash mount control with it.

I think in total it took about 7 hours. 4 of actual work and 3 or farting around finding stupid things like a wire where I could connect to the park lights and then finding out where the tachometer gets it's signal from.

It seems to work fine, although I've only been out testing it and haven't gone on a "cruise"....................yet!

If there is any follow up news I'll be sure to post it.

I found a huge supply of OEM Volkswagen Van cruise control units...and for only $1 each! I think these would work pretty well on a Delica as well. Very easy install too.

robinimpey - nice work on the CC. I couldn't help but notice your rad hose - have you had that replaced? It seems to be an older-style hose. If it is, I would recommend installing a new one.

New hose is on my garage shelf. Going to change that and do the block heater along with a flush all at the same time. Was waiting for warmer weather and now that it is warm I was too excited to do my cruise control so it got moved up the list. Maybe I'll do the rad hose next, unless my pyrometer shows up in the mail!

psilosin-I think you're a few bricks short of a load! :-D

Robinimpey, this may be a stupid question but what happens if the magnet flies off? Does the cruise control just shut down as if you had switched it off?

Robin, thanks so much for posting. I've got a cruise control kit ($4 at Salvation Army) that I never installed in the Caprice. When weather improves, I'll install it using your's as a guide. You seem to have more wires than I do. I like where you mounted the controls, I may have to do something similar.

Right now I'm building a new centre console, so I'll ponder putting the control there too.

Barry.
I'm not certain, but I suspect it would just shut down as it wouldn't have a signal indicating how fast the vehicle was going. The other answer is that I go find the second magnet they sent with the kit and install it. :-)

I installed a similar system several years ago on a car...bought the kit from C-Tire...with that kit, it gave two magnets that had to be installed on each side of the drive shaft to ensure it stayed balanced. I see yours only sports one mag...are ya sure your "spare" wasn't meant to be installed as well? Just curious. Let us know how the CC is working for ya...does the Deli. have the oomph to keep it going? Sometimes with underpowered vehicles, these CC kits "fall off" or disengage on the slightest hill or headwind. I wanna know this isn't the case before I spend the time or money.

Cheers.

Two magnets for front wheel drive vehicles and just one for rear wheel, so say the directions. I have yet to get out and give it a long road test, but I believe you are right and that all cruise control systems will cut out if they have kept the vehicle floored for too long.

My instructions are the same. Not quite sure I understand why this would be, but what the hay.

My thinking is that there needs to be two magnets on a front wheel drive vehicle because the drive shaft, which goes directly to the wheel, would be turning much slower than the drive shaft on a rear wheel drive vehicle which goes to the rear differential.
