intermittant violent shaking

Post by windsnob54 »

Hi,

so it started yesterday, a strange mild shaking that occured occasionally while driving. not directly related to any speed range.

today it got really bad but again only occasionally. heavy vibration, shaking from what i assume is coming from the driver's side wheel. when i break the steering wheel shutters pretty hard. but also bad when just driving straight.

a syptom that i think must be related is that it appears the front drivers side caliper is sticking a bit (there is more heat coming off the rotor than their should be).

then all is fine and van runs smooth.

up until now the breaks have been fine, no significant pulsating upon stopping, but perhaps the mild sticking of the caliper combined with a slightly imbalanced rotor could be causing this? but it sure feels like the drivshaft is suddenly bent and flailing! and then not...

where do i get a new caliper? i saw one post about lordco but i got the predicable blank stare when i asked.

thanks for any input you might have!

Check the FAQ section, pretty sure it's there. Usually I tell em it's for a Mitsubishi Van/wagon. It has worked more often than not. At least it is listed.

okay got the caliper info, sweet ,i forgot about that post... thanks

But the real question is what could be causing the shaking? Has this happened to anyone? i'm not really sold on the brake theory, but will test it asap!

thanks!

Sounds like a loose wheel! Did you check all your lug nuts?

Hi, try to check your front wheel hub, maybe your bearing is gone, or outer tie-rod is gone. so many things, the front axle shaft maybe gone also.
just check this for now, then go further
cheers;

so i guess it was just a sticking caliper that caused the shaking. i took it out and kinda worked in back and forth with a clamp and some wd 40. that freed it up nicely. haven't had the shaking since. so i'm stoked. sure felt like a toasted bearing but those usually either go or not, no on and off-ness.

From my experience ~ especially if you have alloy rims....

Go around all of your lug nuts with your tyre iron. I have found that they loosen off from time to time. You might consider getting wheel locks as well if you live in an area where people have certain habits that they are trying to finance... they sell the aluminium for whatever it is they need.
