Hi from Newbie

Post by Hokkaido JET »

Hi everyone,

I'm a Delica owner living in Japan at the moment. I've found it to be a great vehicle over here, standing up well in the extreme Hokkaido winter. I'm looking into the possibility of exporting it to Canada to sell when I come back (this August). First of all, I was wondering if anybody has any idea how much that costs; also, I have a 1994 Exceed. I think I heard a car has to be 15 years old before you can export it? Finally, does anyone know how much I might be able to sell a vehicle like that for? It's 4WD, diesel, crystal roof, about 170,000 km, aftermarket steering wheel and stereo, dark blue.

Thanks everyone!

not sure exactly, but if you do it all yourself I'd budget at least $3,000-$4,000 (I'm not really an expert on that part though, so someone who has done the process themselves may be able to better educate you on that part)

You can export from Japan any time you want... but it can't clear Canadian customs until it is 15 years old to the month of manufacture.

That is extremely high mileage for Delicas coming in over here, assuming it is in otherwise great shape, it's probably about an $8,000-$10,000 vehicle once landed and all the compliance work done. (possibly less, I'm not sure I've never seen one imported with such high mileage)

On a side note, although a stereo doesn't tend to have much effect on vehicle pricing, It should also be noted that the aftermarket stereo is likely not very helpful if it is a Japanese unit as the FM band won't line up...

Cool, thanks. Would the FM issue be any different with a factory stereo? Not sure I get that...

Oh yeah, and where can I find the month of manufacture? All I know is that it's a '94 model year.

FM frequency band in Japan is different from the rest of the world. I put another post here on the forum about the freq. range... look for that. Simple fix: frequency expander.

I still miss my '94 Pajero!

It's no different on the factory stereo, however the upgraded stereo means nothing if you have to replace it anyway.

Frequency expanders are a simple fix, but not a very good one, they allow you to tune the whole band, but you often can't tell exactly what you are tuning too (except by ear) and the quality isn't always what it could be. They are a good solution if you can't afford a new stereo, but they're far from the ideal solution.

Another thing that has recently been pointed out to me is that the AM band, while the same size, has a different frequency spacing, meaning that Japanese radios will often "just miss" the desired frequency when tuning, landing just one side or the other of it, sometimes it's "good enough" but other stations can't be tuned clearly at all...

ummm... I'm not sure... Mitsubishi in Japan could tell you (from the VIN number) (and if you can't get find any other place, you should get them to put it in writing for you)

The date of first registration (while not the manufacture date, still good enough for import if you're 15 years from it) is written on the export certificate and the de-registration certificate, which leads me to think that it may be on some form of registration card or certificate that you have with the vehicle in Japan (I don't know what paperwork is used with the vehicle over there, so this part is just a guess)
