So I finally got my filtration system built and tried it today but the oil I got is way too thick to pump properly. Trying to find a restaurant that uses canola and doesnt already have someone taking it is next to impossible now. I have acess to an unlimited supply of liquid shortening used for 3 days only for french fries but it just seems like a recipe for disaster as the stuff gets fairly thick below 10 celcius.
Anyone know anything near Coquitlam? I can even do all the filtering/dewatering etc. in exchange for a supply.

Re: Finding used oil
I know our local White Spot uses canola, not sure how receptive they are to donating it WVO burners. I'm going to approach them in the next few weeks, once the shed is built and I've filtered the remains of our stock pile. I've heard Chinese restaurants are good bets. The best quality oil I've found comes from a small mid-eastern cuisine cafe in town that serves mostly vegetarian. The more health conscious the place the better chance that it will be non-hydrogenated.

Re: Finding used oil
I wasn't gonna consider a WVO conversion until I found a supply, now I have one and just picked up my first load of used Canola oil from a high-end restaurant in downtown Vancouver... so, I'll be converting in the next while, but I really don't have the space available or budget to invest into space and equipment to do the filtration at this time, so I'll share the oil with you for filtration and storage...

Re: Finding used oil
I put out a request on FreeCycle for used oil and got a lot of responses: http://www.freecycle.org/group/CA/British%20Columbia
You could also try sites like Criagslist and usedvancouver.com. Too bad you guys didn't live on this side of the Straight, I've got 1,600 litres of filtered/dewatered oil and I'm collecting close to 200 litres a week with more restaurants wanting to get on board.
I'm looking into WVO home heating options for a house we are building this year with radiant infloor heating. Anyone come across residential versions of these WO boilers?

Adam check the Yahoo group - http://groups.yahoo.com/group/altfuelfurnace/ (I haven't bought home heating oil in 2 years).

Already joined altfuelfurnace
Not sure if we are going to have a furnace though, or if we are going with radiant floor heating (boiler & heat pump?) and a fireplace.
EDIT: I guess I should have read the postings more carefully, looks like there is some info on boilers on this forum. Thanks for the kick in the a$$ Kevin.
