Whistler Mountain bike park
Re: Whistler Mountain bike park
Damn you guys are killing me. I have been having a difficult time getting back on my bike since I had surgery on my back. Me and my buds would ride the shore every sunday morning untill I got buggered up, then our group finally fell apart and went their own ways. Hopefully this year I can get back into it a bit, my Aline is sitting upside down in my garage collecting dust.

Re: Whistler Mountain bike park
something very few people know about me until now i guess, is I blew out my L3,4 5,6 and was in a wheel chair for over a year, told I would never walk normally again or be without my cane, I was in bed for over 2 years as I was not able to walk. over about another year I was able to walk on my own, with out help, get rid of the wheel chair, and eventually give up the cane, I do have to do alot of exercises to do weekly, if I dont do a core class at the gym 2 times a week my legs go numb and I start to loose control of of them, wow that sounds sucky and a cry for pitty, but thats not where im going, I guess Im saying DONT GIVE UP, if you work your core you might be able to get your life back completly, but I know I was told I was permanently farked and even was told to apply for my CPP via disability, and still have a permanent parking pass. I dont use it but its there. and now as long as I do the ball class and keep on top of things I am able to rollerblade, ride a downhill bike, and even do squats at the gym, maybe why im in pretty good shape, I have to lol.
sorry if this is a rant, but for us guys with back surgurys and disk issues there is a light and options. and I would be more than happy to help in any way I can.

This riding talk is killing me! I just dislocated my ankle and broke my tib and fib
riding Sexgirl on Cypress. Out for the season. I'll have to live vicariously through the Deli-mountain bikers this summer. Dirt merchant is FUUUUUUUUUUUUN! Happy riding on the trails and in the Delis!
Noel! Good for you to keep up the fight! Nice to see that there's no excuses......right on!

Re: Whistler Mountain bike park
Man, you guys have hit my nail on the head - I'm an MTBer from way back, and really want to get back into it. Went up to Whistler last weekend and watched the people bombing down... awesome! However, similar to Enviro, I had a bit of an accident that resulted in a shattered shoulder and I haven't ridden properly in about 4 years. Now that I'm back in Vancouver, I'm desperate to get another rig (even more desperate than I want a Deli ;), but I'll be taking it easy for a while yet! Shoulder is still a square peg in a round hole, so not a hell of a lot of movement means I find it difficult to get right back behind the saddle, but still, I'm sure I'll be out there eventually.
I might have to hit some of you up to show me some rides around here... when I get a rig... through the yellow gate will be one of the first places I go!

Hey EricN, Mikadog, and Jaz - good luck with the recoveries, may they be speedy and full! And Noel, WOW indeed, good going - VERY cool you are back riding. Your story is a real inspiration of fortitude and will. Thanks for sharing it. Couldn't agree more about the importance of a rock strong core. I started pulling rubber bands and doing isometrics a few years back and am WAY stronger and have far fewer problems with my, until now, chronically sore, even locked up back. As for biking I"m pretty much a XC rider (Campbell River is AWESOME), but still have had my share of crashes and injures, but all, so far, have been relatively minor...
At 45 I don't have the same killer instinct of my youth, but still love whizzing down those single-track downhills! Just a little more caution now, though anything can happen. Some of the worst bashes I've had or have seen have been simply falling over and landing on a stick or rock, or down a bank! Almost every time we ride, even if its just a cold, rainy run up and down the CR Seawalk with Konadog, Jo repeats "I just can't imagine life without a bike - how dreary!" Love every ride, it really could be your last one...
Oh, and Mikadog, I'm right there with jrman, Deli-lama is my favourite name too

Re: Whistler Mountain bike park
WELL, I just got in the door from my second weekend at Whistler, OVER busy on Sat until about 3 as there was a Couple of schools there and all doing lessons, wow what a busy day, Lots of bear sitings, Today was awsome but I lost my jersy out of my back pack, was to hot to wear it over my armour. Some carnage, Colin broke his derailer, and then his rear shock blew out all the oil. so after that things were good, on the last run befor having to head for the boat, the skies closed up and BIG rain , wow did it rain, saw alot of delicas out there, more than last weekend.
Ironicly I also understand about the shoulder, I tore mine out in the oil patch when i was in my early twenties. (Yup im covered in scars) I do alot of external rotation exercises, my dad says that I will never die, I will just eventually fall apart . but Im sure going to do alot while im here.

Re: Whistler Mountain bike park
Ahhh shoulder injuries...3rd degree separation in the first month on a MTB - 1986 - 2 pins in the shoulder, but the thing that bugged me the most at the time is that they said I would be 6 weeks out of the saddle but ended up being 8 weeks!!!! Tried to avoid surgery but the doc said I'd be all messed up if I didn't get it - funny thing is that the same injury now would result in a tight isolation sling for 4-6 weeks and let the tendons / muscles tighten up around the bones - no surgery any more...oh well.
For those that are looking for something a little slower paced (yes, that is me for sure) - check out the following;
http://great-explorations.com/trips/can ... atosky.asp
My buddy has done it last 2 years in a row - compares it to the KVR which we did from Rock Creek to Merrit a few years back - but only in the sense of fitness required...ie, not terribly difficult but your ass better be broken into a saddle or your asking for a world of hurt on the backside. He said it was way more scenic, more variety of terrain, and of course the support van and having someone else cook the food was quite nice. Going to give it a try this year and see how it goes.
I'm not that fast anymore, but love anything involving 2 wheels, downhill, X-C, NS Freeride, even enjoyed commuting for 7 years to work by bike...till family obligations made me a 2 car family (good trade off since that's when the deli joined the family
)
Anyway - check out the link....
Anyone interested in Fromme this coming Sunday morning? I've got a 3 hour window of opportunity 8:00am to 11:00am!!!!! Seymour still has too much snow I hear....

Re: Whistler Mountain bike park
JRman, I hear that it is clearing up above the yellow gate on Mtn Highway, so some of the tracks are opening up. I was up at On Top Bikeshop the other day and they seemed pretty sure that a fair bit was opening up.
I'd be keen to join you on Sunday, except that I have no rig, and I have to work! Bugger! Ah, well, if anyone is cruising through Metrotown this fine weekend, pop into Coast Mountain and say hello (I'm the only Aussie there). I can't do any deals (yet ;), but I'm always on for a chat!
Oh, and 8 weeks?! Try 3 months in a sling as a starter...
Not quite up to enviro's standards though!

Hey Noel,
I honked at you from the black over silver Delica while you were at Timmy Ho's in Squamish. I bike too! We should start a JDM vehicle downhill team! LOL

Re: Whistler Mountain bike park
I saw your delica at Timmys, I heard a honk but wasent sure if it was for me. I would love to do a down hill weekend for JDM's I know Mt washington has posponed there opening from the 20th to the 30th for the downhill park, but its tough to beat whistler, only the ferry cost is a killer, Cost me $82 each way for the 3 of us, but its still worth it, Ive been 4 days now this season and wondering if it would be cheaper for me to just buy the season pass for the park.
Do you live in Squamish?
I loved it up there so much we are looking on the mls.ca for possible places,
Funny about my injuries, as long as Im active i can be active, but if i stop , I rust up really badly and have to start physio again, My friend says its like a drug addiction in reverse, I HAVE to keep active now and dont have a choice. I love the options in Squamish, Quads, snowmobiles, mtn bikes, mtn climbing dirt bike areas..... looks like Mecca for the outdoors people.
