Hi,
Just to check on the damages if there's any.... I would do this first..
1. I would install the camshaft with the good tight fitted dowel (you need to replace the damaged one) to hold it in place at the correct camshaft timing mark and torque the cam bolt to 45 ft-lbs.
2. Open the valve cover and visually see if all the valve springs are opening and closing (more or less) properly just to make sure you don't have any bent valves. You can see a bent valve right away as the valve clearances will be very very loose on the bent valve. You can actually move and feel the rocker arms and see how the play is compared to the others.
3. If all looks well and the engine turns easily without any hard spots, try and start the engine and see how it will run. If it misfires or runs rough, you may have a bent valve and some of the cylinder has no compression.
Unless, you are running at a high speed when the problem occured, it may just be a cylinder head job. You will need a set of valves and valve seals too. I would machine the valve seats to get a better sealing on your valves and assures it not to leak.
If the problem occured at high speed, then there's a big chance the piston can break upon impact on the valve. Worst scenario, replace the damaged pistons (if there's no visible damage on the cylinders)

I just got some time to take a closer look at what happened.
All the belts are intact and appear to be very new.
Three of the exhaust rockers are broken, cylinders 1, 3 and 4.
3 and 4 were completely broken while #1 is cracked all the way through, but does not actually have pieces missing. We managed to find all the pieces
from the broken rockers (confirmed by "reassembling" them ).
The sprocket on the end of the camshaft has had the bolt hole enlarged and oblonged, so it appears that it may have been loose for some time.
The dowl that holds the sprocket in place for timing was sheered off and took a small part of the cam shaft with it.
The valves seem to be alright. they all look straight up and down. When taped on with a hammer them all move with no unusual resistance.
If the valves were bent, wouldn't they look all cockeyed? even with the springs?
So my uneducated guess is that the bolt that holds the camshaft sprocket on wasn't torqued to spec ( I am guessing undertorqued as the bolt threads don't show damage from over torque), slowly loosened to the point that the dowl became load bearing and also wore away at its hole in the sprocket and camshaft. The dowl was then sheared off and it all went down hill from there.
So I think I need a new camshaft, camshaft sprocket, dowl and three exhaust rockers to start.
Now the camshaft doesn't use bearings, so is it possible to put a different camshaft in? is there a special procedure?
Does anything I said make sense?

after reading your story it sounds as if mine might be an easier fix....

Well, I got it all fixed.
replaced the camshaft, camshaft sprocket and three exhaust rockers, adjusted the valves and retimed it.
took about 3 hours and was fairly easy to do.
We barred it over a couple of times to listen for any "weird" noises, and didn't hear anything.
Started it up and its running great.
I got lucky in the fact that no valves or pistons were damaged.
I hope Green1 has as much luck as I did!
