Hey guys, am I missing a hose here?

I cracked open the little panel behind the drivers seat to look at my airfilter, and noticed what looks to me like an air intake, but it looks like I'm missing a hose to connect the bottom opening with the upper opening on the side? Can anyone confirm - this just doesn't look right to me...

I haven't noticed any performance issues.....

I don't know why, and I don't know how the intake works, but "No, you're not missing a hose there." I thought the same thing first time I looked in there.

It lets the small rocks and heavy dust settle out before the air goes into the filter element.

I want to put a y valve in there, one still open and the other to a snorkel in side the van, I figure that way you can switch it for when you'll need it and the there would have to be so much water in the van that you drown before you get water in the engine . Leave the moonroof popped and/or the window cracked and your good to go, could even have the valve cable operated to make life easy and the switch faster. it's a sleeper snorkel :)

Bruce weighs in on the topic and I agree with the idea that larger particles settle out before hitting the filter. If you drive many gravel roads you will end up with clogged filters very quickly if that hose is connected.

no, you absolutely are not missing a hose, and someone who doesn't know what they are doing added one to Mick's vehicle where there shouldn't be one.

The gap is intentional and lets heavy particles fall out before the air filter. this is a good thing!

I took mine out but both Delica's that I got over had them both on.

Definitely the same hose/clamps and they are different years and bought from different companies.

that hose looks factory installedto me.
I am not saying that there might not be a benifit to taking it out. I would not know since.........i don'thave a f&*#ing delica yet !

if you look at the 2 "ends" that are in there, the rear most one has a flared opening on it (whereas the forward one does not)
This shows that it is not really designed to have a hose clamped on to it.
many vehicles have had one thing or another added at some point, that doesn't make it right (mine came with a hose in there as well, it was very obviously after-market, and not very well done)

You won't notice any performance difference with or without it. what you will notice is that without it your air filter won't need to be changed as often.

Simple test,

1/ Drive 100 km on dry gravel roads with additional hose in place. Pull air filter, set shop vac to blow and stick it inside the filter.

2/ Drive the same 100 km of dry gravel road without said hose. Pull air filter, set shop vac to blow and stick it in inside the filter.

I was recently working on my unit and had taken the upper tube section out without paying attention to it. So when I go to put it back, it seemed rather odd that it did not connect to anything, that gap caused me a lot of consternation. I started thinking I must have lost a friggin big piece of hose somewhere which seemed unlikely. In the end it was that fluted end on the lower tube end as noted by Green that was my big clue and I eventually got it figured out, but not sure how much time I wasted in doing so. As it seemed rather straightforward I never would have thought to take a picture first, but I guess one would have saved me some time on reassembly.

So I guess it does not have a hose, but weird that in the picture above the hose almost looks 'factory' to me, and it seems like a rather weird design at any rate, wouldn't they use a screen or a prefilter to remove the bigger detritus? Also seems weird that jfarsang would have found hoses in 2 different units. And what about a reverse logic that if some shops were adding them on a regular basis as aftermarket items, maybe the reverse could be true and lots of Japanese shops were simply removing them on a regular basis? So I accept that it probably does not have a hose. I'm almost 100% percent convinced it does not have a hose from the factory, but thought I'd throw the other idea out there as Devil's Advocate.

Then the prefilter would simply require changing every so often, this way gravity does the work and there's no extra work, it's a brilliant solution actually...

No hose because that space is actually a plenum. An air plenum does one of two things: it either allows the air to 'stabilize' or it allows it to be 'shaped'. In this case it's being 'stabilized.' These may not be the technical terms for what is going on, but it's how it was explained to me by one of my naval engineer friends.

By stabilizing the air, it gives the particulate which is being carried along a chance to fall out, thereby cleansing the air, thence no filters (or less of them in some cases, like this one). Particles which would not otherwise have been picked up except for the speed of moving air are dropped before the next increase in air flow/speed. The other thing 'stabilizing' does is smooth-out any vortices that may have been building in the air flow, but this is not likely a concern in this application because of the design of the air filter which follows, but that is for another thread.

As for why it looks 'factory' it could be as simple as it looks like it should. Without knowing the true/complete/proper purpose for the space, our brains are wonderful compensators. What I mean by that is that our brains are always trying to fill-in-the-blanks for us, as it were. This is why optical illusions work, why people think someone they just met looks so much like someone they know, why we have deja vu - because our brain is trying to complete the sentence our senses started.
