Air Care and insurance question

Post by The Pinkfingers »

So when I bought from Japanoid yesterday, I only put on temporary insurance until we sold our other vehicle. David (at Japanoid) said that usually they recommend getting insurance from a place near them, because they deal with foreign imports alot. He said that less knowledgeable insurance agents will insist you need Air Care, which apparently you don't until you renew your insurance.

So I tried to transfer insurance today here in North Van from our old to new, and sure enough, I "needed" an Air Care certificate. The computer wouldn't let them insure my Delica otherwise. They said to get around this they needed to call ICBC (which was closed, being Sunday). :evil:

Has anyone else experienced this? My temporary insurance runs out tonight, and now I'm stuck. When I walk down to the agent tomorrow morning, what should I tell them?

Aircare for diesels is mandatory after one year of being insured on bc roads.

You have one year from the day you insure your Delica to drive without aircare in the lower mainland.

That goes with any older diesel (ford/dodge,etc..) oop

Just let them see your delcia for inspection of the vin & then wait until tomorrow as they need to call icbc to overwrite the aircare exempt for out of province vehicle like your delica.
just wait until tomorrow try as early as possiblw when icbc offcie is open from 9:00 to 4:00, then your be fine.
hope this help,
Cheers;

One workaround is to insure the vehicle in Territory Z (outside the lower mainland) until you can get through to ICBC and do the AirCare waiver. This will cost you more, but it's only for a few days. This is how I got Gumdrop on the road last September.

Working with a JDM-savvy ICBC agent will help in other ways, since the ICBC agent's computer will reject the VIN our Delicas come with.

Got it insured today. The agent called ICBC, who told them to insure it in Territory Z and then transfer to Lower Mainland. Worked fine, though I had to pay a much higher premium for Territory Z, but now will get it refunded back (and more) for transferring it to Lower Mainland. A little bit of a convoluted process, but worked in the end.
