road trip i'm doing july 1-2

Post by coaxial »

First of all Friday evening , saturday, and sunday (June 28-30) I'll be doing the vancouver - harrison - pemberton - vancouver loop, camping at weaver lake friday, and ?? saturday.

Then after a quick rest and cleanup at home I'll be doing this as a 2 day road trip on monday and tuesday:

http://tinyurl.com/5y6jgd

Any advice on the route or things I should check out along the way up north? I've only been as far north as lillooet before. I was originally going to turn around at prince george but and I hear bowron lakes is really nice and more worthwhile than PG.

The harrison/pemberton trip friday-sunday I will be doing with a delica/xterra convoy, the monday/tuesday trip north I will probably be doing on a motorcycle though I have not decided yet.

Let me know if there are any things/people I should visit along the way :)

We're going to take Granola and head up to Pemberton/Kelowna/Summerland for sat-tues this weekend (wine tasting stuff and relaxing)

Would be neat to hook up with some Delica's.

Where will you be/when ?

We'll be in the Kelowna/Penticton area sat/sun/mon

Sloquet Hot Springs is nice. Off to the left, between Harrison & Lillooet Lakes. You pretty much drive past the driveway.
I am heading North, past George on Sunday morning. Gone for a week with my son. Perhaps our paths may cross at one point.

Yep I will check out sloquet to see how crowded it is, I haven't heard good things about the conditions up there lately. Lot of yahoos apparently.

I'll keep an eye out for you!

Coaxial, I grew up in Quesnel so depending on how far off the road you want to go and how long you want to be away, I can give you some decent ideas for the Williams Lake to Wells run. One thing, you MUST visit Barkerville if you haven't before. LMK what your time-frame is like on that leg of your trip and I can give some good options.

jfarsang, I live in Penticton and if you want to get together for a coffee stop on Sunday give me a call, 250 809-1313.

Duffey Lake, the Cariboo and back in two days doesn't leave time for much more than driving. :-(

If you've never been to the Cariboo, try to take in some of the scenery. The tourism folks used to call it The Big Country, and they're not kidding. Pick up a copy of the Cariboo/Chilcotin backroads map book and have a look. If you had more time I'd recommend Horsefly/Likely/Quesnel Lake, as well as the loop west of Quesnel to Nazko and back through the Blackwater.

Have a good trip!

Me? I'm working at least part of Monday, but may wander up to Harrison Lake Tuesday. I'd love to do Highway 20 all the way out to the coast some day, but what BC Ferries wants to take Gumdrop on the mid-coast routes (with a different definition of underheight vehicles) borders on obscene.

Hi Josh Coaxial, When are u leaving for Harrison, Jay and I not sure what we're doing this weekend, Harrison is the default, are you interested in meeting up?

For next week ... definitely do Barkerville (historical re-enacted town, but great), and Bowron Lakes is pretty (but lon-oon--oong lonely roads, that ends at the lake with a pretty mountain scenery, gosh doesnt it look just like ...ummh Harrison, Stave, alouette). Ground probably still pretty cold up there, mum & I up last year on May Long weekend, ground frozen from about 2 inches below ground, so tent pegs wouldnt go in (even with a hammer, pegs just broke), wear warm clothes. PG is long miles of nothingness, and gosh, doesnt it look like ... ). Speeding tickets. 70 mile house is pretty, lots of little lakes. But as Marsgal Laura says, you're probably biting off a bit much in distance, very big distances (her family live up there), watch your gas tank, long times between fills.

Maybe try to leave from Pemberton, take the bike to Harrison? We could drive your deli home. Give yourself an extra day to cover those huge distances.

Recommend around Loon Lake, Bridge Lake, Blue River. Closer to home, and scenery changes a bit more. Camp at Bridge Lake, listen to the Loons at sunset, just like the CBC hinterland tv spots soundtrack.

I love the Chilko area, very craggy mountains , different geology as non glaciated areas, so looks very different, remote, beautiful. Feels high up, like yr on top of the world.

"Pedro" is often at Williams Lake, family. Hey Pedro Pierre, are you reading? You guys met at the Harrison Camp out. Williams Lake reminds me of ... Pemberton.

Cheers, Christine.

Northern BC isn't quite as cold as people make it out to be. If the forecast is correct expect 30 degree dry beautiful heat and clear sunny skies (oh, and bugs, lots of them when it warms up). Wells from Vancouver and return in two days is a lot of driving though. But if that is your cup of tea, then have at it. There is lots to see along the way, although those of us who travel the routes on a more regular basis tend to overlook all the things to see and do. Best bring your fishing gear and belly boat and enjoy the weather.

Hey Christine!

Thanks for the tips I'll definitely spend some time looking at maps before I head north.

I'm just heading home from work now and going to pack and head to harrison shortly afterwards. We are going to camp at weaver lake if there is room tonight, if you are out in the area come say Hi :)
