Where to put tow points

Hi folks,
I want to put tow points in for attaching the tow straps too, but i don't know where they would go, anyone have pictures and/or instructions on this?

Hi folks,

What's wrong with the existing ones?

(as per the mitsubishi manual, wrap tow straps around the bull-bars between the upper and lower attachment points, there is also a tow loop on the rear of the vehicle on the passenger side)

Here's a picture of the two front one. You just need to add some (I forget what they are called but as you can see one anchor has one and the other doesn't). Shackle?

one thing to be careful of, the mitsubishi manual specifically states NOT to tow from those points as they are tie-down points and now tow points... that said, I can't see any reason they wouldn't be good enough...

What would the tie-down be used for? I've taken my truck and a few others out of sticky stuff using those and they did the job. I can see how they suggest using the bull bar but it's similarly attached to the frame... Soon I'll have a hitch there anyway so won't have to worry as much on those tie-down vs tow points. 8-)

Tie downs are used for shipping vehicles, tying them down on trains, trailers, boats etc, they are designed for a different type of load.

As I said though, I don't see why they wouldn't work, just that the owner's manual states not to use them.

Well I've used mine to tow some pretty stuck vehicles and they have been fine.

The points are located very close to where the bar bolts directly to the chassis rail, so it's pretty strong around that area....plus they are reinforced around the hoop/eye.

I've never had a problem with front or rear tow/recovery/tie-down points....and I am sure that there are plenty of grateful Pajero & Range Rover owners out there that can testify :-D :-D

I can't find any of me recovering someone with the front points, but this Paj was well & truly stuck (grounded out on the sills) until the Mud Monkey pulled it clear!

On the towing eye which is under the rear bumper on the passenger side (big hoop coming down off the chassis rail)

word of warning here, there is also a hole in the chassis rail slightly forward of that loop, it is NOT strong enough for towing (someone prior to my owning the vehicle tried it, it tore the hole open)

Not sure what you mean by that?? The rear towing eye is about as strong/strengthened as you would ever need it to be.

I have just been out and checked all 3 of mine and there is no hole in that area....just LOTS of welded metalwork where the bar for the towing eye is welded around the shackle mount and chassis rail. If you pull this out, you're pulling the leaf spring out and the rear of the chassis too!

I've had to do about 12 snatch recoveries from this towing eye and plenty of heavy pulling on bogged down Pajero's....(and I mean serious pulling) and not one sign of stress/damage/weakness.

Are you sure some previous owner hasn't cut a hole there for some reason?? Sounds a bit odd to me?

The tow point is fine. the problem on my vehicle is that someone ignored the perfectly good tow point and hooked in to a hole on the frame rail instead, these are NOT strong enough and obviously tore out.

Hey Bruce: that 'arse' shot of your van, is that when you tried to determine how far over it would go without tipping over? That is one funny video! You definitely ain't no 'shiney' in that clip (to paraphrase your comments from another thread)!
