Diagnose my ride - FIXED

Does your Mitsubishi L300 make a strange noise? Need wheel alignment specs?

Yeah, the belts were so loose that neither the alternator/oil pump nor the water pump were spinning which lead to the high temps.

Did you check for water level in your radiator and overflow bottle? If your rad is low it wouldn't matter if your pump was working or not. Check the rad when the engine is cold. It'll blow like a geyser and burn you if its hot.

To inspect your belts and water pump for tension, seizing or leaks remove the black plastic semi circular cowlings at the radiator. They are screwed on by a phillips screw and release by turning towards you counter clockwise. just remove the closest one to inspect the belts and pump.

The radiator/fan assy you are referring to is the air conditioning condnser and will only turn on if your a/c is operating. The additional fan on the a/c radiator should come on at the same time as the compressor if your system is working correctly.

I doubt the pump is seized, just belts too loose. Don't know exactly what you did to loosen them but take a look first before you run for help. Might just be a simple fix. :-D

Hey Wayne, thanks for the response. The reason the belts were loose was because I sheared off the bolt that holds the alternator on to the tensioning bolt. I have some shots of it earlier in the post (page2 maybe). So I removed the alternator, extracted the sheared off portion still attached to the alternator, reinstalled the alternator, replaced the bolt and retensioned the whole deal. It all works great now. Good temps, no squealing, batteries charge, what else could I ask for?

I also did a good clean job on my batteries terminals and charged them up to 13V. Starts super easy now.

The thing on the alternator is an air pump (vacuum) that operates the various vacuum actuated valves on the engine. The reason it needs this is because diesel engines don't create a vacuum since they have no throttle plate restricting the flow of air into the engine when the engine breathes in. It has oil lines running to it for lubrication, so it's not responsible for pumping the lubrication to the rest of the engine, which would be a disaster if it failed when the alternator belt failed.

Well that makes me feel better, nice to know what it actually is :-) Is the oil pump on the same belt as the alternator?

I never thought of using a video to track down an issue, definately a great option to think about in the future if I have any problems. Might be a good idea to have a repair section on the forum that has repair tip videos and/or pictures.

No - I think the oil pump is inside the engine, probably driven off the cam shaft somehow, the water pump is driven with a belt, usually the same as alternator, although I haven't checked...

would tend to agree, I have never heard of an oil pump run by a belt, that is just asking for trouble.
