crystal light shades..not working..black smoke
Hello, we just purchased a 1993 delica exceed on line.Drove on sunday to pick it up and once we got there they informed us non of the shades were working!! Needless to say not a happy camper!!!They said to get a estimate locally to fix and they would pay for it..Problem..no one locally will touch it, no one seems to know about the delica..my excitement has now been turned into feelings of..pissed off...I am in nelson bc...does anybody out there no of anybody in this area to take it to.Also we noticed that in the first couple gears it pours black smoke..then gets better is this normal!!! We may have jumped on buying it a little too fast..worried I got a lemon...I will save my opinion of the importer until i have my shades fixed..then I will rate them...you know who you are!!!
Thankyou any help would be much apreciated...

Take your van to CVI in Richmond for a tune up. That should help with the black smoke. Tune up is around 300 bucks. They clean your injectors set your pump timing and adjust your valves. I drove from Calgary to get the tune up and it was worth the drive. There is also a thread about all the things that need attention when you get your Delica here things you want to address are: Timing belt, (when you are in there change your water pump, front oil seals, and thermostat) coolant hoses if original need to be changed. Check your accessory drive belts (alternator, power steering, ac. Check all your fluids, make sure they are full and clean. And lastly check your wheel bearings. If you do all the preventative maintenance you will have lots of miles of happy motoring. Sorry cant help you with your shades though, I believe there is a thread on this site somewhere on how they work.

Re: crystal light shades..not working..black smoke
Your black smoke may not be solved by a tune.
Mine was doing the same. Blowing smoke through the first 3 gears.
Went over everything. Delica tune didn't change anything.
It turned out to be bad solenoid and seals in the IP.
Complete injection pump rebuild. Not just the seals, but a complete rebuild/timing set. $$$
Just a head's up. Hopefully it's a simple injector clean that you need !
You can technically take your Delica to any diesel mechanic that will work on a 4D55 (Dodge Ram/D50 1981-1985 pickup truck) same engine, slightly different head.
Good luck !

As for the shades... there's probably more Deli's in Canada with broken shades than there are ones that work. EXTREMELY common problem. This is one of the only things on a Delica that was poorly designed/manufactured. Here are some "Do-it-yourself" instructions:

Re: crystal light shades..not working..black smoke
Black smoke is fairly rare, when we organize local delica group treks we all are following each other, comparing speed, rpm, tach, temperature etc via radios, and only once did anyone have black smoke -- just a tiny puff on a hill. So, not normal at all.
As to your sunroof stuff, that is difficult. Very fiddly work, so will cost a lot of hours of work. But since the whole point of buying the Crystal Roof is to have light, yet be able to close off the light for privacy and so you don't fry your brains in the summer, make sure it gets fixed. I see Glen of CCautos has replied to you, fortunate for you, he will probably have the most parts selection, and is VERY knowledgeable with great prices, so be guided by his expertise.
Please keep us all informed, and let us know if you need group pressure to keep your dealer motivated, none of us like to see other Delica owners with problems.
Good Luck, Christine.

Re: crystal light shades..not working..black smoke
you should hear the motors, if not, then you have something else going on... you said no power right at the fuse??? that indicates something fishy....

Re: Thanks for the help
You've probably stumbled across the single most important 'smoking' issue that most fail to appreciate/realise when they buy a diesel-engined vehicle: you can't drive it like a gasoline vehicle.lisairwin2001 wrote:Thankyou all for your tips..as for the black smoke..We have contributed it to learning to drive the delica properly. Its much better now..And I do want to thank the dealer where I bought my delica for keeping in touch and offering assistance. It is very much appreciated..
This is doubly the case with the Delica because it is only an 2.5 litre, 85hp engine. I've said to a number of people, if this was a NA van, it would probably have a 6.5 to 8 litre engine in it, with 200+ hp at the rear axle in order to meet the expectations most of us have of a vehicle like this.
Without even looking in the mirror, if you can 'feel' no more response from greater pressure on the pedal, you've probably reached the end of the 'power curve' for that situation. Only thing you're going to do after that is pour fuel out the tailpipe in the form of black smoke. The same thing happens with a gasoline engine, it's just that the smoke is not as noticeable out the back end.

Re: crystal light shades..not working..black smoke
I always compare Delica straight-line performance to an old air-cooled VW Beetle. Very little will happen if you floor the accelerator (except for black smoke, as noticed). The speed will build up, but you have to give it time to build up. More acceleration seems to happen in the torque converter and transmission than the engine. It encourages a more leisurely smell-the-roses driving style.

Is that a way of saying "centre of the universe" for those of us who have more mundane jobs?marsgal42 wrote:...brass visiting from head office earlier this week..

Re: crystal light shades..not working..black smoke
Our former largest customer, based in Plano, Texas (i.e. Dallas) bought out the company. There are just two of us left in Vancouver, from a peak of nearly 1,000 in the heyday of the 1990s. This has both pluses and minuses.mararmeisto wrote:Is that a way of saying "centre of the universe" for those of us who have more mundane jobs?marsgal42 wrote:...brass visiting from head office earlier this week..

Is Dallas the centre of the universe? It certainly thinks it is, the centre of a universe of freeways and strip malls. The hotel we stay at on trips south is just off US75, which has 8 lanes of traffic and 6 lanes of frontage road. Ask your favourite mapping program for US75 at Campbell Road, Richardson, Texas. The frontage roads are why you see addresses like "5410 Lyndon B Johnson Freeway" in Dallas.
No Delicas in Dallas, though opening up things with NAFTA may result in some Hyundai Graces migrating north. Diesel is as expensive as it is everywhere else. It does not seem to occur to the people there that gas prices would be easier to handle if they parked their monstermobiles and drove something a little more reasonable, or moved closer to where they work. Apartments are for people too poor to buy a house, and public transit is for people who are too poor to buy a car.
Edit: to avoid any confusion, my astronomical stuff is for fun. I am, by profession, a computer nerd. And there is lots of computer stuff in Dallas.
