Hi all.....My Deli won't start. Key in ignition...hear the click of glow plug....attempt to start and nothing. Starter not rotating. Thought it was problem with starter so removed the starter and had it rebuilt in Calgary put it back in and same issue. Contacts and bolts at starter are clean and tight. I can get her to go by bypassing the ignition and directly jumping the starter, but obviously there is some electrical fault somewhere. There is a little metal box behind driver's seat under the hatch next to glow plug solenoids that is clicking labelled "nippondenso" not sure what it does or if this is the issue. Pretty sure wires going into it are something to do with ignition. Any help or ideas would be appreciated. From other posts I have tried the shifter fix to no avail, but will pull it apart to see if it is dirty. On a side note for anyone in Calgary I had the starter rebuilt in under 2 hours for $140.00 at Mac's Auto 229 41 Av NE. It came back looking brand new.

Did you try and start it in neutral?

Re: STARTING PROBLEM
I would look at the easiest the most common reason for a problem like this, the safety switch in the shifter so that you can only start in P or N, do a search and you will find a couple issues like this, I think there is one one in this list on the first page in fact.

Re: STARTING PROBLEM
Yes.....I have tried easy fixes such as wiggling the shifter and taking it apart to clean. It will not start in neutral. I have checked the wires at the transmission all seem intact and not corroded. I have replaced the battery (including new terminals) and the starter. I have rigged up a push button start to get the van going but think that the problem lies in a relay mounted next to the glow solenoids behind the driver's seat. "Nippondenso" is written on it and i'm pretty sure this is where the fault lies as my aircon does not seem to be functioning either. Looking for part # for this relay if anyone has any knowledge.

Re: STARTING PROBLEM
PROBLEM SOLVED!
Was faulty starter after all. Once starter and batt replaced and still wouldn't start I re-examined all conections at the battery. Whoever owed the van in Japan must have had some accessories going on because connections at the battery were a real rats nest. By trying several varying options I hit upon the magic combination and she started right up.
