Oil Stains

So in my daily struggles to get the deli started it seems to be i leave quite abit of oil on the pavement?
ill get in the deli, fire up the glow plugs 3 4 time over 10mins or so, then start the ignition and keep a good rev on the peddle to keep it from dieing.
now i "know" im having trouble starting because the oils to thick, so i should take her down to a thinner oil and get some sort of heat source on there. im jut not understanding where the oil would be commin from thats spilling on the pavement...blown gasket?

check the filter - mine got loose somehow and caused an oil leak that I thought was my turbo or something major....

look for oil starting from the top down,if that makes any sense.

Something's wrong here: it's not that cold, even in Prince George, and your Delica should start easily. Cycle the glow plugs once, hit the starter, it goes.

The manual says 15W-40 oil, which is fine down to far colder temperatures than anywhere in B.C. is experiencing at the moment. These engines never crank all that enthusiastically when they're cold, but they do crank, and they do start.

Thats the main thing im worried about, its only 10 degrees here.THATS NOTHING TO WHAT IS COMMIN!just if i take to a shop any where around here its gonna cost me an arm in a leg in labour cozz most garages iv delt with use the "unfamiliar so it will take longer", saying(not saying there wrong but still)

im gonna go down to the parking lot and clean up everything with a rag, then start her up and see where the oils commin from, id say thats a good start. im using 15-w40 so i dont know whats going on. like a said before once its running she runs great no learching or anything just the first like 3 min i have to keep a slow foot on the gas ( in park)other wise the RMP dives and then she dies.

Did the oil leak start at the same time as the starting trouble? If one has a loose oil filter (hope that's all your leak is) I wouldn't think that would affect the ignition system. Fresh glow plugs for the starting issue? Good luck

ok so i was just down in the parking lot taking a look around whilst doin good wipe down.its defiantly not the oil filter or oil drain bolt. it looks like it come most from around the oil pan, maybe one of those bold is alittle loose?
while i was cleaning up i turned my glow plugs on and left em on for the entire time, so about 30 min.then i cranked the ignition...kind of wined for a couple seconds and then fired up (little ruff) but not to bad.then i put a clean rag under the deli to look for drips.waited for about 10 min and found no drips what so ever?i am very much confused... im thinking the glow plugs are the primary reason for shittyness.maybe they just need a super long time to warm up.( need new ones, or new recoil.)maybe when i fire up the deli without letting them heat for like 30 min and rev the engine that makes a leak?i dont know.Im gona go find a stereotype Prince Georgian to take a look,rednecks know there diesels.haha

ps- i am waiting for the two clicks of the glow plugs every-time plus some waiting afterwords

For a time, I had no glow plug action at all because my glow plug control unit was blown - this was last January, and although it was only down to -5C at night, I was able to start the beast with a bit of patience (without the assistance of the glow plugs heating the chamber), and more importantly, I did not experience the oil leak you are speaking of. I drove my van this way for around 2 weeks, after which I had the glow plug control unit repaired and had some new glow plugs installed. All the while - no oil leaks what-so-ever.

I would guess that your oil leak has nothing to do with your glow plugs (and vice versa) and and that you are dealing with two separate issues - one related to your oil leak - the other to your glow plugs and/or glow plug control unit. When starting, you should only have to wait for the two clicks - the first when you turn the ignition, the second when the glow plug controller shuts off - then start - there should not be any reason to have to wait for the glow plugs to keep 'warming' - in fact, I am pretty sure that the second click turns the glow plugs off so they don't continually heat inside the chamber...

Have you tried calling Glen at Coombs Country or any of the other mechanics that frequent this forum?

i dont think i was clear in my last description. i think the glow plugs is why the deli sucks at starting-making me rev the engine keeping RPM above 1000,me doing this shakes the van violently and lots of black smoke comes off. im thinking that the 3 min of warming up (shakes) some how make oil leak from some where.
now i have had the "delica special" and a fuel injection rebuild done within the last six months so it shouldnt be either of those.
im in contact with mardy right now regarding a block heater. mostly im hoping one of those shops seeing this call for help, but i will be in contact witht hem as well

When I needed servicing on my Landcruiser Diesel I took it to Prince George Fuel Injection Ltd. 561-0799. This was a few years ago, but the owner then was happy to work on non standard vehicles, the shop was absolutely spotless, they washed my truck before even letting it in then washed out the shop after it left. He did a fantastic job with the injection system.

If it is the same owner it is worth trying them.

After the second click you shouldn't wait because the glow plugs are cooling down again, mine doesn't like starting if I leave it for even a few seconds after the second click but fires up perfectly in the cold when cranked immediately after the second click, or even before the second click.

The shaking and smoke almost sound like gummed up injectors, but if you had them cleaned recently they shouldn't be dirty.

Start immediately after the second click. The glow plugs are off at that point.

Even with a dodgy alternator, I never needed more than one glow plug cycle last winter. My coldest start was at -6. A bit of smoke and general carrying on is typical in cold weather, but the starting procedure in the JDM and JPNZ manuals works just fine. We discussed this at length last winter. Please do a search. These things are not difficult to start, but they do require correct starting procedure.

How old are your batteries? Does the starter crank the engine properly?

The oil leak is something else. Why do you think your oil grade is wrong, BTW?

After the initial start,when you shut the van off and start it again dose it start raight away? or dose it do the same thing with the initial start?
