Sliding door extension

Does anyone here know where to get the sliding door extension to clear the wide fender flares?

I don't know that it's an extension per se, but it was described to me as more of an adjustment.

Take the door apart, find the bolts/screws for the rear arm, unbolt, add a couple of washers between the door and the arm, re-fasten and try that. It will only add a few millimeters (the width of the washers), but like in my case with Moon Machine, that's all that's really needed.

Did you need to trim the metal by the arm to help clear it or simply add washer?

Apparently it was just add a washer or two.

Now, if one was putting on the ridiculously wide fender flares, there might need to be some more drastic modifications, but I don't think any of us have done that at this point.

There is a longer door hinge for the wide flares, downside is its about $300 and its such a small thing, im looking for a used one from either a wrecker or the Japanes parts auctions, bring it here and make it affordable. I know there is a few fabricators here on the site, maybe someone could take a look at there hinge and make a fix that wont break the bank....

I would like a set of those hinges. I've just changed to a new set of pro-comp wheels and Roughrider AT tires which have a less "bulgie" sidewall - so the door binds much less than before, but still doesn't clear the tire perfectly. I will set some time aside to figure this out one day including attempting some of the many of the recommendations from this web forum and post positive results if any.

I have templates but haven't had time to get a fabricator to make them up.

They aren't as easy as I originally thought they would be to make which would account for the high cost in Japan.

When adding washers to to rear arm, do you have any issues witht the door sealing when it is shut? I am a month into the process of having my deli certified in Sask and I thought I was in the clear. I figured I would put on wheels (American Eagle) at the same time as switching to DOT approved tires (Kuhmo) and then I run into the sliding door issue. I could wait to have wheels with the right offset shipped here, but I am looking at 6-8 weeks shipping time. I was hoping on a quicker solution as I am sooo frickin anxious to drive this beast.

How far do your tires stick out ?

I have a 15x8 rim (31/10.5/15 tire) with 3 3/4" backspacing. Puts the tire out about 1/2 inch at it widest point. Door will open but rubs heavily on the tire.

Bruce / Mystery Machine recommended washers, but he was talking about going inside the van, removing the wall panels and installing washers to ease out the sliding door channel on the side of the van. I believe he said the rail is attached in 3 locations and suggested slight to no shimming on the first attachment point, then slightly more increasing to the rear of the van, but only a few mm at the most. The downside is the rail will sit out a little bit away from the body of the van - but the door won't rub if your tires are only sticking out a bit like mine.

Sounded like he has not done this, just one of his many great ideas. I'm opting for taking the door off at the hinges (just a few simple bolts), cutting out the inside metal part that is rubbing, and tack welding in a new panel that is recessed - it won't be pretty though I'll do my best, but nobody can generally see that part of the door for the most part anyway.

One more job added to the spring list!

Thanks for the insight fellas. I have opted to keep the wided wheels and mod the door in some way. I will probably give the washer trick a try this weekend and I'll let you guys know how it goes. I had a look at the rear arm and I think that should work with little repercussion to the door sealing when it is shut, as the arm folds into the van when it is closed. I have a couple buddy's who are metal workers as well, so if the washers aren't enough that template could come in handy. I'll keep you posted.

I am working on it Jesse but life keeps getting in the way! The parts aren't really that challenging but the arm poses some problems if I want to do it quickly (CNC). The challenge is to figure out how to create it with the minimum number of clamp set- ups since I only have a three axis machine. How many people might be interested?
