WHY PAY FOR ICBC INSURANCE?!
Hello
I am asking this to all drivers of JDM's.
Frankly almost every day I see trucks, cars and Delicas that are driving with VOIDED insurance due to not complying to the simple standards set up by transport canada. Ok, I am not acting on the behalf of any one other than my own concern as a member of this forum. Further I am not fully happy about all the rules that are set up. That said, I have been involved in the import and inspection packages for JDM's since last year.
I am not deeply concerned to see so many JDM units are driving around that are incorrectly inspected(Thank you, Canadian Tire, IDIOTS!). Most people that I have spoken to have little or no idea that there is even an issue not to mention that they would not be covered by ICBC if there was ever any issues.
To fully make sure that you have met the standards that are needed for a Delica you will need at least the following. Ie modes that are not on (most) the vans originally.
DRL
Front marker (seen from the side).
E coded headlight unit.
Rear high mounted break light (most have that after 91)
Orange reflector in the front and red in the back.
DOT tires.
This and sometimes more are needed thing are needed to be looked after EVEN if you have a pass on the inspections from some well meaning (by ill doing) inspector.
By far the worts cases that I have seen are from Canadian tire as they add light that are not need and don't put the reflector on
or change out the headlight units.
There are link to many certified inspection garages here in Bc and I would strongly advice you to contact them if you have further questions. There is NO grandfathering applied that will save you from a possible financial ruin and huge hassle.
OK, there, that is my rant of the day and frankly most of the issues that I can see are not usually Delicas.
If you have any questions regarding your pre-inspection I offer DIY advice, absolutely free of charge.
I will follow up with photos of shame as I come across them.

Oddly enough, most of us are pretty familiar with import requirements. Word has gotten around, the bad apples are largely gone, and the standard of import vehicles is high.

Hello
Laura,
I agree with you. I am not talking about the grade of imports... I am addressing the high level of Jdm's that are not street legal. Again most Delicas that I see are. That said I saw one today that had some markers (LED) front and back but no reflector( typical CanTire) and original headlights. That was parked a block away from a skyline with no DOT work done on it at all. The issue is not bad apples as much as some people trying to cut corners or simply ignorance. Both often resulting in bad aftermath. Frankly there are many inspection garage that have no clue what the are doing and often instill a false sense of belief in the unknowing owner.
Bottom line is if you have a reputable place carry out the inspection you can be sure that you will comply, if you are in an collision or other matter when ICBC is dragging you through the coals. And trust me on this: ICBC will do all in their power not to pay your claim!
Again: There are good links on this forum on what is required beyond a mechanically sound rig, to pass the DOT inspection.
I would say the most of the dealer/Importers that I have come across, do the required mods. But there are obviously also folks that don't or this issue would be mute. Often from what I can tell they are older vehicles that have been registered in bc before the rise of of JDM's that we see today. Hence my part about the grandfathering(if that is a word). If you don't have the required items modified then or now, you might just as well donate you monthly ICBC payment to red cross or what have you.
Have a nice day,
Daniel

For most of us on this forum, you are preaching to the choir, as it were. Some of the inspectors we've had our vehicles certified by have worked diligently with ICBC in order to ensure our vehicles pass the out of province inspection.Delicanadabc wrote:Hello

As for the people who get their vehicle inspected by a 'reputable inspector,' get the sticker for their vehicle and then get screwed on a claim (should they be unfortunate enough to have to submit one), I would think the driver might have some recourse to say the inspector was delinquent. I'm just speculating on that one though...
Better questions might be: why are 'regular' cars/trucks allowed to drive around with cut up/folded license plates? why are 'regular' cars allowed on the road when they are smoking along like Uncle Buck's car? why are 'regular' cars allowed to drive about with a windshield that looks like a spiderweb? have busted tail lights? hoods that don't secure properly? too many occupants? etc? etc? etc?

Hey Paul.
How are you?
Thank you again for the bumper! It looks so much better then my bent up rusty one!
One factor that plays a big role there is that the inspector is required to supply image of the "your" vehicle on the day of inspection. That is now on file and can be compared to the status of you van if a claim is filed.
See you next time I out surfing your way!
Chow,
Daniel

Re: WHY PAY FOR ICBC INSURANCE?!
ICBC payed my claim - full replacement value - with no questions asked. They did not check lights, reflectors or anything else while I was there. Mine had a passed inspection on it.
Just my experience. Also completed the entire process in 7 days.

Re: WHY PAY FOR ICBC INSURANCE?!
Daniel,
What you are proposing has been done a long time ago (pre-Delica time).
This is a Canada-wide JDM/import/discussion forum based on importing/registering/complying/insuring/altering/insurance law/etc...
There are lawyers, inspectors, customs agents,etc... that read/post on this forum :
Imported Vehicle Owner's Association of Canada
http://www.ivoac.ca/pn/
What you listed in your first post is already covered here with regards to Delica's
Compliance Help and Install Guides / For Delica's :
http://wikrad.com/delica/index.cgi?comp ... all_guides
To Do list on newly acquired Delica
http://wikrad.com/delica/index.cgi?to_d ... red_delica
I don't understand why you titled this thread "WHY PAY FOR ICBC INSURANCE?!" ? It's misleading

Re: WHY PAY FOR ICBC INSURANCE?!
We were in at ICBC a month or so back dealing with a cracked windshield claim. Because we were getting new glass and about to lose the inspection sticker I asked if that was an issue we should be concerned about. "No, once it's been inspected and approved, it's approved - period." Was the inspector's response. I take that to mean our bus is like any other vehicle on the road now. The inspector thought the bus was "cool" btw. He did ask if driving on the right was weird, but hey, who doesn't?

Happy Day!

Hello
Yes the information available is not the issue here. There is lists and good forums. That said the wrong JDM's are still out there.
The reason that I ask the question is that it would surly get lots of hits, but also why PAY IF YOU ARE NOT COVERED.
That is the deal if you don't always have the right set up you are at the will of ICBC.

That goes for any vehicle that you drive on the road in Canada.Delicanadabc wrote:That is the deal if you don't always have the right set up you are at the will of ICBC.
The onus falls upon the vehicle owner to comply with the MVA.
Delica's are no exception and no different.

Re: WHY PAY FOR ICBC INSURANCE?!
Clearly I am JUST trying to play devil's advocate here. Really, there no issues if you do comply, and yeah that is for all registered cars in BC. The issue still remains that there are lots that are not going to be covered and then the question stands. Why pay simply not to get pulled over if you are really not covered. If the result is that someone who is reading this makes the effort to put the right things on their respective JDM then my job is done here.
I know that there have been issues with claims and it would be helpful if someone with a horror story would add to this discourse.
Have a great day,
Daniel
