importing yourself- how long for shipping???

Post by SnowSlide »

I'm wondering, among people that have imported themselves, how long it took to get their Delicas on a boat and shipped over here. I found and paid for a Delica at the end of July, and it still isn't even on a boat. I'm dealing with Hidehiko at Samurai Garage, and from the feedback I've gotten from people here that have dealt with him, I don't think I have any reason to be too worried. I'm just getting a little impatient...

How frequently do boats typically run? What is a reasonable amount of time to expect to wait to get your vehicle here from the time of purchase?

It's been nearly 2 months now, and I still have no information on when it will ship.

Any consoling words???

Hi Snowslide -- Congrats on your new Delica (I know you're anxious to actually get to drive it soon!)

I've shipped over two vehicles in the past 3 years (one being a Delica). Both times shipping took almost a month after purchase (roughly 2 weeks waiting on the Japanese side for the next ship, and another 2 weeks on the actual boat).

I understand though that ship scheduling and routing can make actual shipping time quite variable. You're vendor likely has some sort of a volume relationship with one of the main shipping companies (e.g., NYK Shipping), and in order to save costs will probably insist on using one of that particular company's ships.

I'm assuming you're dealing with the importing yourself (please ignore the following if using a broker...)

Once it arrives, there are various "holds" that will need to be removed before Annacis Terminals will actually release the vehicle to you (Canadian Food & Inspection Agency, Canada Customs, and the Shipping Company itself). Annacis Terminals makes sure that everybody has been paid prior to releasing the vehicle from its yard.

If you're picking up the van yourself, I would recommend that you deal with Canada Customs at the earliest possible moment (e.g., as soon as you have the paperwork) Canada Customs' downtown Vancouver office does process vehicle imports, but they operate on an appointment basis (I would call ahead by at least 3 days).

All things considered, my guess is that your total delivery time (from purchase to actual pickup at Annacis Terminals in Vancouver would be about 5-7 weeks.

Hope this helps!

I went with an importer instead of doing it myself, however I finalized the purchase on August 19th, and it was on a boat September 15th supposed to be here september 26th...

so it was pretty quick here, however I believe the importer I used went with container shipping instead of roll-on roll-off shipping which seems to be more common among importers, I believe the roll-on roll-off is cheaper, but finding spots is harder and takes longer, while container spots are more expensive, but also more available.

beyond that, hang in there... waiting is definitely the hardest part!

Isn't that a song, waiting is the hardest part. Congratulations. Which one of his van's did you buy? Are you getting one with a fridge?

I emailed Fuskidio (SP?) many times, he will ship roro (roll on, roll off) first. After a certain time (more then 2 months) he will ship your Delica in a container, as with my van, and take the extra expense instead of paying for continued parking fees. Concerning roro shipping it seems that it is has become busier then normal, and it shows with all these JDM vehicles showing up. Other importers informed me that I could wait for over 4 to 6 months for arrival with roro!

Yes, the longer the wait - the sweeter it'll be when it arrives. :D :D

thanks for the info everyone. that makes me feel better.

I bought a 1991 L300 GLX with the plain hi roof, 31k manual tranny. I'm really curious about the possibilities for modifying the roof (i.e. some kind of camper style).

I feel like a little kid waiting for Christmas!!!

How about a roof top tent instead of a hard pop top, like;

ARB makes em too.

A buddy started by making one for his VW Syncro and now makes these out of Nanaimo - http://www.cartopretreats.com/index.htm
