Does your Mitsubishi L300 make a strange noise? Need wheel alignment specs?

Glow-Plug Clicker clicking all the time

Post by impalator »

Hi everybody,

My glow-pug klicker (or whatever the hell it is) also clicks frequently during driving - not erratic and not all the time as described in the original post - but every now and then it clicks during normal driving... and my temperature is steady in the lower third ever since I got all the new stuff put in (radiator, waterpump, thermostat, head....)

Is this something to be worried about - and does it harm the engine in any way? Never gave it much thought so far...

Thanks and regards

The glow plug controller is either confused about the temperature of the engine, or has just plain lost its mind. Both can happen. Check the various threads on the subject.

Get it attended to before you burn out something more expensive to repair/replace.

Do you know if the relay cuts our entirely at a certain engine temp or if it continues to heat?? The dual glow plug voltage has me confused.

thanks

The glow plug controller always seems to run the glow plugs, regardless of engine temperature. If the engine is warm it just doesn't run them for very long.

My own procedure is to cycle the glow plugs if the engine has been off for more than 10 minutes or so. If less, hit the starter immediately.

if the engine is up to temperature and you are driving and you still hear clicking then something is wrong.
a few possibilities:
- temperature sensor on the head could be faulty (this is what mine did)
- glow plug controller could be faulty (several people have reported this issue)
- the wire between the 2 could be faulty (hey, anything is possible!)

the easy way to troubleshoot is to swap one of the suspected components with another Delica and see if the problem goes away, if so, that's your faulty one, if it's the sensor, replace it, if it's the controller, rebuild it.

I assume then that glow plug condition could affect fuel mileage. If the glow plug heats during normal operation it must also improve fuel combustion.

I blow huge black starting below freezing and was going to change my glow plugs after all I read. The next time I travel in the cold it should pay off

The glow plugs are meant to heat up the cold combustions chambers so the oil/air mix can ignite under pressure more efficiently at cold startup. After a few explosions the chambers are plenty hot enough and the glow plugs become irrelevant :M :-D

After I start my van and its cool out the glow plugs might cycle a few more times, but once the van has ran for a minute they never cycle again.........at least until the next time I start it! :-D
