Re: some new upgrades
Hey Gary,
Nice work and nice to see it coming together. Does it come with a driver side ladder? 'cause soon you'll sure need it! Looking back at your earlier pictures there's something else I really like, your garage!!!
Cheers!

Re: some new upgrades
thanks david.I dont think Elaine is too impressed though. its getting kinda hard to climb into.she doesnt know about the 33s yet. this whole project would have been really hard without having a 22 bay shop at my work. i'm really interested in seeing your new skidplate installed,in person.still think yours is one of the nicest deli's i've seen so far. cheers , gary

Poor girl, hope she's not expecting to make it fit into any local underground parking!
Thanks for my bus and advises along the way, catch you around the corner!

Re: some new upgrades
Hi everyone. After 6 months, with no time, back to work on the van. Our big roadtrip to drumheller convinced me I need way more power to turn the 33"s up big hills. Just mounting the intercooler this weekend. This is going to be my main obsession for a while.

Re: some new upgrades
Welcome back Gary!
Sounds like it was a late night job... Glad to see someone local taking up the intercooler task. I've done it on my previous non-intercooled turbo car, lots of work, lots of fun.
I've looked at the Ford T-bird (3.8L), it's a nice thick intercooler without being pricey (used). The pipes hook on each side while other style have both in/out pipe on the same side... Would one work better than the other one? Kinda curious as to how you'll route your tubing, I think that's the most challenging part of your project.
Can't help myself by asking a few questions...
1) Which intercooler are you using?
2) Intercooler pipe size?
3) Are you planning on using silicone elbows (45/90...) to give some flex to your system?
4) Are you removing your EGR to gain room/access?
5) How much more boost do you expect to run?
6) When can I touch it?
Keep the pictures coming!
Cheers,
ps. thanks again for your shackles, they're installed and look/work great!

Too cool Gary. I'm very much jealous.
Really interested in how much more boost you'll get.
I was thinking of doing that or a propane injection

Re: some new upgrades
Gary, was awesome to meet you and check out your bus at the breakfast meet a couple of months ago - very inspirational stuff!
I wouldn't be too worried about damage to the intercooler, in my previous life as a petrol head I had an item fall off the back of a truck which was going the opposite direction to me at 60kph (120kph total in a frictionless plane!), bounce once, then hit my intercooler and it just made a big ferk off dent rather than actually rupturing the IC. With the underbelly plate in place, it should be all good imo.
Dfnder, the intercooler (IC) is basically a heat disperser (my father in law refers to it as a "heat exchanger", but he's a little old school), as when air is "charged" by the turbo, it also makes it a lot hotter, so the IC acts to disperse that heat by cooling it down with the oncoming air - much like a radiator for your cooling system. It means that the temperature of the air that the engine see's is a lot closer to the air outside the vehicle (ambient) than if it had gone directly from the turbo to the engine. This has a few benefits, including the air is denser (cooler = denser), makes the engine less likely to pre-detonate, and also enables much more tunability if you are using an aftermarket ECU, not that it's applicable to Delicas.
Hope that clears it up a little!

Re: some new upgrades
The function of a turbocharger is to push more air in to the engine than it would suck in on its own, thus producing more power.dfnder wrote:what does the inter-cooler do, newb to turbo/intercooler
When air is compressed it heats up. Hot air is less dense, negating what the turbocharger has done. An intercooler cools the air to maintain its density. Compare the numbers on the L300 4D56T engine (no intercooler) with the L400/Pajero 4D56T (with intercooler) to see the difference.

Re: some new upgrades
Laura and Jaz explained it pretty well. The cooler is from a 2wd gts skyline. 2 1/4'' piping, silicone hose, egr has to go. I dont want to build the piping under the seat untill Isee how the snorkel piping fits in. It should be here next week. keep ya posted, w/ more pictures as I go.

DONT FORGET ABOUT OUR OTHER LITTLE OBSESSION(S) OF AN ARB AIR LOCKER FRONT AND REAR AND UNDER ARMOR AND WASHER FLUID INJECTION AND ONBOARD AIR COMPRESSOR AND the other things that we cant talk about.garyo wrote:Hi everyone. Re: some new upgrades
side view pic. cooler and relocated trans cooler.
moving the tranny cooler was super easy. just shorten one of the support braces , drill new
mount hole as high as possible ,put in a self tapping screw. 25 minutes later, no longer in harms
way.

Same engine in an intercooled Pajero of the same vintage: 117hp (or 114hp, can't quite remember off the top of my head)
The trick in these vans is going to be trying to route the piping from the turbo back into the engine. The turbo in the Delica is stuffed above the wheel-well (under the driver's seat), while the turbo on the Pajero is up on top, readily accessible to the intercooler. I don't have a picture of the Pajero, but I've seen one and once I learned where the turbo in a Delica is situated, I see why none of us have tried this modification before.
When you get it done, be sure to post some pictures so we all can see how 'easy' it's going to be. I'd like to make this mod for towing reasons (and because I live in BC too - damn hills).
Question garyo: Did you remove the plastic 'scoop' at the bottom of the radiator in order to have enough room to make the intercooler fit? Or was it not there in the first place? I also notice that your skid plate (the aluminum one) does not seem to have the same down-angle as mine (at the rear edge) - did you mount that higher as well, up out of the way?
