Rear Hatch Rattle

The Deliberator is making a loud rattle when its idling. not stoked!

got my new winters put on last week, some studded artic claw's from Kaltire. All I need is for winter to arrive and ill be set!

It seems like the trend for winter to start later and and stay later, so im not too worried yet, but I am suppost to be on snow coaching my ski team next weekend and its not looking good!

Any help with the rattle, its pretty annoying!

What rpm is you idle set for?

I'm assuming from your title that you've pinpointed the rattle to the rear hatch? Is it not closing tightly anymore? When the engine is off, can you grab the rear hatch handle and make a similar rattle by giving it a bit of a shake? A little more info would be helpful in diagnosing.

500 or so... when i give 'er a little gas it will go away, it is only rattling at low idle. I have to put quite alot of weight into the hatch to make it stop.

sorry it is vibrating between the door and the frame on the right side of the hatch.

Is this a new rattle? 'Cause it sounds pretty normal to a little bit of a rattle, especially at 500 rpm, which is pretty low. In fact, it sounds alot like our van. :-) Every so often when it's cold and low rpms, there's a slight but noticeable rattle from the hatch. I don't pay attention to it anymore - I think it's part of a 15 year old vehicle.

ive only had my van for 3 weeks, just trying to take care of the little things.

In my humble opinion that might be a bit low. According to Butch at cvi where I did the timing belt and deli tune last week it should be around 700-800. To set it it help to have a six pack and a friend as you really want to adjust the idle with the transmission in D. That is your beer drinking friend can put it in gear while you adjust the idle. Clearly, 8-) alcohol free beer is better if driving is involved!

I was told rpms around 700-750 in park, 650-700 in drive. I thought it was Butch that told me that, but I could be wrong... (it's happened once before). :-)

As for the rattle, I wouldn't worry about it, especially if it's not there at 700 rpms.

Hmm.. well +/- For sure it's lower in D. That is I was thinking 800 +/- in P/N. Otherwise it would be up there in the 1000 and that is a bit mush in P/N.

So in short it will be lower in D but it should not rattle too much in P/N.

Chris,

I set my idle with Butch, actually Butch set the idle and I sat in the saddle and watched. "We" set it to 750 RPM, in neutral.

As far as the tailgate is concerned: It could be when you put the new tyres on the Deliberator she sat differently. One way of dealing with the rattle is by adjusting the stoppers on your tailgate, do you follow me? When you have the tailgate open you will see a rubber stopper located on either side of the bottom part of the tailgate, itself. These correspond with two triangular like receivers on either side of the tailgate frame. You can adjust them with a screwdriver, a bit of a hit and miss affair ~ but before doing that I'd reset the idle first. Do you know where it is? I only learned this one lately but it is a piece of cake:
  • First; start your engine.
  • Next; go to the liquor store and purchase an half sack of your favourite tipple.
  • Get a friend on the way back.
  • When you get back to your garage (or wherever) the engine should be warm.
  • Engage the E-brake and put the Deliberator in neutral and have your friend sit in the driver's seat.
  • Lift the passenger seat and hook it up on the strap that hangs from the shoulder harness anchor and ask your friend to pass you a beer (don't forget to offer one to them).
  • With a couple of 10mm wrenches (I believe) there is a spring loaded bolt with a couple of nuts on it located at the front of the running engine in plain view. One of the nuts is a locking nut, the other actually does the adjusting.
  • Adjust the idle until your friend tells you that it is at 750 RPM. Then tighten the locking nut.

You can actually do this yourself from sitting in the driver's seat..... but like most things it is more fun with a friend. Then if the tailgate still rattles you can deal with that then... smiles.

But don't actually park in your garage and do this with the engine running. You'd never know if the fuzzy feeling was coming from the beer or the carbon monoxide. :shock:

Not to be left out on this...mine had a similar issue. I found that the portion of the rear latch mechanism that is attached to the van body (not the door) needed to be moved forward (or backwards I can't remember). There are two bolts I believe that hold it in place. I moved it forward and that made the door close tighter, which got rid of the rattle.
