Re: Paj parts swap?
No Pajero/Montero/Delica's came with lockers on the front.
Delica L300 = Montero/Pajero Gen I drivetrain
Delica L300 rear differential can be fitted with an ARB RD05
Mitsubishi Montero/Pajero factory air locker (rear) :
- Gen I (VERY rare). Have only heard of two in the states. Would be a direct swap 3rd member.
- Gen II 95+ Montero SR (larger 9.5 inch rear differential)
It is hit & miss. You would have to physically look at the rear differential to see if there is a Mitsu factory locker installed.
Once that's confirmed and you have it, you need to do the following to put it under a Delica L300 :
- Cut off the coil spring sections and weld on spring perches (Gen II axles are springs)
-Modify E-brake cables (not sure how to on Delica's. They are different lengths than Montero's)
-Have a driveline shop fabricate a yoke to mate up with the stock driveshaft to the SR rear yoke/flange and have the drive shaft cut to length and balanced.
-Install the electric pump and electronics from the montero in the Delica.
It's a lot of work. We did it on a Montero about 4 years ago. It took 2 weeks and more headache's than necessary.
With that said, you get a factory rear locker and disc brakes.
Plus the Gen II rear axle is wider than the GenI's on the Delica's roughly 3 inches total hub to hub. You may want to put spacers or different offset on the front rims to match the rear track width.
Front locker.
You will need to pull the front diff carrier/axles/shafts (GenII is larger) out of a 3.5 Gen II Montero.
Then have a driveline shop cut the front drive shaft to length and balance/mate with the larger diff.
Buy/install a RD110 ARB air locker (the only locker option for the front).
That's a ton of work too.
I want to do it but can't have my Delica out of commission for an 'undetermined' amount of time while the project is being done.
I'm fitting a rear arb locker that is already mated to the 3rd member which saves me hundreds of bucks and lots of shop time.
Other than that, I would love to lock the front but unless I can find a front larger montero diff with a locker already in it, it's too much time involved unless I'd have a second vehicle to drive around.
Hope this helps
Jesse

Re: Paj parts swap?
Thanks, I had thought some Pajs came with front, rear and centre diff locks with the super select 4wheel drive or something like that, I stand corrected. It is clearly a major pain in the ass, I was thinking about it as I looked at aussie lockers and seeing that they wont work in lsd and you have to get an open diff first, I suppose I could find someone that would swap an open diff for my lsd. also I remember you saying something about not being able to fit a locker into the stock front diff, is that just the arb locker that wont fit?
I figured that an aussie locker up front wouldn't be too bad as I would only be in 4x4 when I actually was off road, it rarely snows in Victoria and I'm from Ontario, if I can drive a 77 celica in 2 feet of snow on ice I can handle a delica in a little slush in 2 wheel drive :)

Re: Paj parts swap?
SuperSelect 4x4 is a combination of AWD and P/T 4WD / transfer case.
I'm looking at sourcing one. If I can find a tranfercase out of a Pajero, I will try and adapt it into our Delica.
That would be the ultimate setup.
Active-trac/Superselect is the largest improvement of the gen II over the gen I's.
AWD and 4x4 shift on the fly dry or wet.
The differentials are all the same.
One option as well if you can find a 95+ SR complete for cheap and take it home. Then you can take out the rear axle, swap it in and the front carrier/axles. But it's still a lot of work even for a competent mechanic/fabricator. Welding and lots of time/fitting involved.
I'm unaware of any locker that will fit in the L300/GenI Montero front differential.
Only one I know of that will fit the larger 9.5" differential is the ARB RD110.

Re: Paj parts swap?
thanks for the info, I hadn't realized the super select was full time 4x4. I was hoping to find a cheap and easy thing I can slide under the accounting departments radar, not looking likely :(jfarsang wrote:SuperSelect 4x4 is a combination of AWD and P/T 4WD / transfer case.

Re: Paj parts swap?
Asked and checked some more.
Factory lockers available in Montero's :
Some 92/93 models, most of the 94-97SR models, and 98-2000 models with the 'cold weather package'

Re: Paj parts swap?
Just rear Mitsu lockers.
No Mitsu's ever came with front lockers off the line.

If you look up, you can see it has been mentioned over 2 years agoike849 wrote:Have solved the front locker problem for the L300 Delica. It needs a Paj 8" front diff...
check out the details here;

You need the diff housing and axles from a genII V6 Montero/Pajero

Re: Paj parts swap?
My typo mistake
Front lockers from ARB available for Gen 1 and Gen 2 Montero/Pajero
Gen 2 diff will NOT fit in an L300
Gen 1 diff will fit in an L300
You need the diff housing and axles out of a Generation 1 Montero with a V6 (larger axles).
About 2 years ago I pulled the front diff housing off Granola and fitted a gen 1 diff housing from a wrecked 88 V6 Montero.
The two modifications required are the have the driveshaft shortened and the crossmember to be cut and reworked to allow the more angled driveshaft angle
