2.25" exhust...
just got a 2.25"exhust put in ($250) .. exiting out in front of the rear wheel. its going to have a good growl for the meet.
tomorrow i'll be looking into mod'n the air intake.. thinking of ditching the stock filter and cylinder housing and replacing it with a k&n type external filter mounting direct to the turbo intake hose in the airbox.
I'll figure out how to post some photos when im done.
next in mind... EGT/ pyrometer and turbo boost adjust?? propane??
maybe just wishfull thinking, but so was the exhust.

Exhaust
Just went to 2 1/2" with my exhaust. Put a magnaflow muffler in and a stainless tip.
Iwas told by my perfromance guys that unless I have a bigger turbo inlet that upping the air filter and intake will do little but cost money.
Let me know how yours goes.

thanks guys, good imput. im going to go see a guy today about intake and ask all these questions.
Thomas, did you notice any power increase with your exhust?
Crusher, how much time and effort am I looking at to put a pyrometer in the Deli? did you fit it in the manifold above the turbo? and good idea/ bad idea on blanking the EGR? does it really make a diiference?

blank the EGR, good idea
pre-turbo bad idea unless you are removing the turbo and manifold...steel shavings and turbine blades are not good bed buddies...
post turbo, into the elbow, 2 hours to wire and complete...i was informed not to put hte pyro on the steering columm unless it is hooded, too much green glare on the windshield for night driving...

You guys are way out of my league.
Could somebody breakdown the function of a pyrometer for me?
I understand larger exhaust but isn't their a resultant loss of back pressure which the engine is designed to run with?
And what is the final word with blanking the EGR? I was all set to do it then read some posts contrary (again discussing the "designed function of the engine")
Any help turning these muddy waters clearer would be helpful and yes maybe a little hard on the wallet.

a pyrometer measure the heat in the exhaust flow, the higher the heat the more chances of issues with cracking the head and the cooling system has to work harder to disapate the heat from the coolant.
the lower the exhaust gas temps the less the cooling system has to do especially on long inclines (BTW, the inclines do NOT have to be steep).
a diesel is different from the gassers, gassers need back pressure to have proper torque properly, diesels run fine even with no back pressure. 2 1/2" exhaust works well on all diesel engines up to 4L...
can you post up the links to the EGR block off plate concerns? i am very interested in reading them...

I guess those EGR concerns that I had came from a post by Mitch
Was all set to blank the egr out untill i talked with a FUSO mechanic (big mitsubishi trucks) he said aside from it burning up harmful ozone gases it the egr acutually cools exhust gases, asists combustion by bringing in unburnt exhust gases etc, etc..
However he was the 1st guy to say not to do it.... everyone else seems to think its a good idea.... id like to hear from guys who have run it though the whole year blanked out and some results. especially with more turbo as your exhust gasses would be hotter.
Tell us more about boosting turbo and what it takes to do it??? do you kill your milage or better? did you do a bigger exhust? bigger intake? Pyrometer?
Curious...

increasing the boost does not give you better or worse milage, your right foot will do that. increasing the boost will give you more power at higher rpms or "working" the engine.
curious how the return of exhaust gasses "cools" the exhaust since you are pumping heated gasses back into the chamber. i can see heated gasses improving the combustion on a cold engine but one that is up to operating temp?? where is the benefit?
just my opinion, take it for what it is worth...

2-1/2" Exhaust
It sounds a lot better. Performance is up a bit, I'd say about 10 per cent I guess. When you're dealling with a 10 horsepower engine, the addition of that 11th horse is quite an improvement.
Make sure the muffler you go with has a pretty clear flowthrough or all the 2-1/2 pipe you put in will be wasted.
A lot of muffler shops have a flow velocity meter (a giant vacuum cleaner thingy) that they can test different mufflers on. Go with one that has a bit better backpressure than a straight piece of pipe the same length.
A good performance place that deals with diesel should be able to spell out any concerns you have.

a common misconception is that a larger exhaust will increase HP, it doesn't. it allows the turbo to spin up faster but in the end the HP is the same...
a free flowing muffler doesn't mean louder, it just means less restrictive...now that being said it CAN be louder but doesn't have to be...

Muffler
I din't say louder. I said better...
It no longer sounds like a volkswagon with a pickle stuck in it - I think perhaps my stock muffler was shot.

LOL!!
now that was funny..."pckle stuck in it"
if a muffler is shot it can cause excessive back pressure due to colapsing baffles...
