light sqeaking when 4wd engaged

Post by Chewy »

So, the deli is a destroyer in the snow, in and even OUT of 4wd. The only issue I have is that just recently there is a creaking coming from the t-case area when moving under load in 4wd. I haven't driven it anywhere besides quite slippery conditions in 4wd (and even then, as little as possible). I don't have a proper driveway and for that matter anywhere that isn't covered in snow at the moment. Anybody had this issue? I'm using the 4wd sparingly to not at all if I can until I figure this out.

Thanks in advance for any advice.

Are the joints greased?

should be, she was just serviced at ccautos, but I'll check to be sure, are there grease nipples on the joints?

Yes - the nipples are on the joints.

I had the full service regarding the points as well, but coming back from relatively deep snow I thought I would look at them again while we had her up on the hoist. They needed grease because of water in the joints, which makes sense when you are ploughing through deep snow.

Also if you're in deep snow, make sure to check your front/rear differential carriers for water in the oil. Same goes for the Tcase.

This is standard process when submerging the puppies in water. Snow would be the same thing.

I just wanted to be sure... Is it a light squeaking coming from under the vehicle or is it the light on the instrument panel that is squeaking? If it is the former then we have pretty much covered that; but if it is the latter then I gotta tell you that I get this all the time.

There are 11 grease points on a Deli (according to CVI):
3 on each front suspension
3 on the rear drive shaft (one on each U-joint, 1 on the slip joint)
2 on the front drive shaft (one on front U-joint, one on the rear of the shaft. That one doesn't have a grease nipple, it is a small bolt; remove, replace with front grease nipple, grease, put back the way it was)

looks like the ULSD has struck again, the IP was leaking (I was using an additive, but had to fill a tank without it once) which caused diesel to leak right onto the front halfshaft knuckle joint. IP isn't leaking, or at least far less since I've put additive back in, and I've regreased the joint, and used a fair amount to push out any water or diesel remaining in it then wiped excess, along with all the others to be sure.

Thanks for the tips guys, loving the weight balance of the deli in 4wd, impressively nimble and very easy to recover from slips and slides in the snow.
