Yeah they would, and have been for decades, hence the current blubbering for a handout - That aside, I took your sage advice and made the switch to Rotella 5w40 synthetic. Just finished the project ahead of the next snow (outside mechanic) so am looking forward to tomorrow morning's cold start. Thanks for the heads-upjfarsang wrote:Ford/Chrysler used these engines in the 80's. 5w40 is what is listed on the manual for -15 celcius. They wouldn't blow smoke up your ways for no reason.

i wouldn't worry about switching the oil in Vancouver. It's not cold enough. Especially if you park inside overnight.

True, it really isn't cold enough to worry too much about it and happy day it looks like it's gonna warm up now anyway (bring on the rain!!Jester wrote: i wouldn't worry about switching the oil in Vancouver. It's not cold enough. Especially if you park inside overnight.

Personally I made the switch because the Rotella 5w40 synthetic is engineered primarily for diesel motors and I believe it will help my motor work better and last longer. If it helps with startup a little bit on those two or three days in the year the temps. are below -10, all the better, but I plan on using it year-round anyway

thanks for that jesse!jfarsang wrote:Bump for this winter
i live on the coast and true, it rarely drops below -10 here. but like jesse says, -20 in whislter.
i got my delica to take me in to the mountains. i can drive 40 minutes from my house near the beach when its 0 and be in -20 or more. (once i was almost locked out of a toyota b/c the locks were frozen!)
if im gone snowshoeing all day, or staying all night camped in the snow, ill be glad in the AM to have synthetic oil! oil change is overdue, ill get the synth 5w40

I use Amsoil 5w-40 synthetic year round.jfarsang wrote:I'll just be running Rotella 5w40 synthetic all year round.
Plugged in for variable hours prior to start. Weather based. -36 + plugged in = easy start!
In hot summer after 3500 kms trip. No leaks. No issues.
May switch to heavier lube next summer.
Synthetic works fine.
Thanks,

This is the best thing you can do for your Delica this winter L300 and L400's alike.

Re: -10 & driving with 15w40 ? CHANGE YOUR OIL !!!!!!!!!!!
um, how damaging is it to have 15W40 synthetic in the winter?
i JUST had an oil change at a mechanic's advice.. in calgary, who said 15/40 was fine.. is this guy out to lunch?
my delica (as well as deisel engines) is two weeks new to me, and i apologise if i should post in member intros first but i'm a little concerned.
there is a block heater in it that i use. will this along with properties of synthetic oil keep my delica running this winter?
thanks for the great forum and information exchange!
it's been said in a number of threads before, but i'm going to learn a lot from you guys here.
mike.

And now...lunch.
Are you hungry?
Your oil is fine. Well a tad thick for our forecast, but fine.
Back to lunch...
Thanks,

Like White Mule said, lunch is a good thing.
5w40 or 0w40 is better in the winter, especially in Cowtown than 15w40.
For reasons listed in this and the other winter oil threads, it's easier on the engine/starter/components and overall running condition.
In the spring-fall, 15w40 is the weight of choice.

Are you sure that you got the synthetic because not all Rotella is synthetic. For the price you quoted it sounds like you picked up the "Dino Fino". Wal Mart carries it in large pails as well but it is not the full Synthetic Rotella T6. A 20 liter pail of Rotella T6 Syn is around $150.00......$8.00/liter. There are three types of Rotella T;Chewy wrote:NOTE: if you have a discount at lordco, Rotella is ridiculously cheap, 4L of Rotella 5w/40 was 12.00 for me about 2 weeks back. That is cheaper than a 4l of the generic lordco dino stuff. Pretty good deal for some of the best diesel oil out there! I'm going to go back and stock up the next chance I get.
T (regular dino)

T5 (dino/synthetic blend)

T6 (full synthetic...the best)

I almost made the same mistake when I saw the nice big pail in Walmart for cheap,cheap.....................Kirk out.

Re: -10 & driving with 15w40 ? CHANGE YOUR OIL !!!!!!!!!!!
I did much research on oils, and found that PAO based oil, such as Mobil 1, are superior to ester based oils such as Redline and Royal Purple.
Mobil 1 is a true synthetic molecule compared to something like Castrol Syntec that is not a true synthetic.
Mobil 1 Turbo Diesel Truck 5w40, aka Mobil Delvac 1, now comes in a 1 quart consumer container. It seems that Mobil got smart and found out that people were going and getting the gallon jug of Delvac 1 for pickups and such.
I am using Turbo Diesel Truck in a G54B(Turbo).

Thanks! My heavy diesel mechanic roommate was just giving me shit for this today too.
So it looks like an oil purchase is in my near future. Does everyone still recommend the oil change every 5000km with full synthetic?
