great - shifted from 2H to 4H now have a squeel

Grrrrr - driving home through the icefields on the weekend I left jasper in 4X4 then once up to speed shifted into 2H.
Later in the drive the roads got nasty so I was getting ready to shift back into 4H. - slowed down getting ready to stop and shift into 4H.
Then I recalled reading here that you could shift on the fly. So around 30km/hr I tried to pop her into 4H.
BIG MISTAKE. A loud grinding sound ocurred and I quickly pulled the lever back to 2H.
Stopped, backed up a bit, stopped and put it in N then into 4H. No problem, but then today I notice a rattly scraping sound when driving in 4H.
What a bummer - learn from my F-up and always stop before shifting into 4x4.
Wonder what I did to my poor baby ???v Grrrrrrrrrr

Bummer I've been shifting back and forth between 2 H and 4 H on the fly throughout this messy weather and have not had an issue myself. Were your hubs already locked when you attempted the shift? The on the fly shifting only works if the hubs are already locked... Good luck

That's why I don't like auto locking hubs. It's a trust thing with me

What probably happened is your auto hubs were disengaged and when you put it into 4H, the grinding ensued.

You can take the auto hubs apart and make sure they work as well as re greasing them to make sure.

I had mine make some awful grinding a couple times when I tried shifting while braking in semi slippery conditions and/or braking and turning a little. you have to ensure you are going straight and that all your tires are going the same speed (ie no slipping, spinning or sliding) after I would come to a stop or close to it I would hear a clunk and all was quiet again.

Thanks for the comments guys, what you mentioned jfarsang got me thinking.

When I first got my van I tried out the 4X4 and the wheel lock light would come on. Then after getting the out-of-province inspection done at ProActive in Calgary, one of the recommended services was getting the front hubs repacked.

But the curious thing is, after that the wheel lock light wouldn't come on. I just figured it was a bulb issue, because the actual 4X4 would still work. But now I'm thinking, that the Auto-hubs would only 'lock' when I'd stop and shift into 4H.

And, when I shifted out of 4H to 2H on the highway, the hubs unlocked (without me realising) then when I tried to put in in 4H on-the-fly, the damage was done.

Man, one of those times when you wish you could turn back the clock.

Can you guys tell me, in this situation, do you think the damage would most likely be within the transfer case or more likely in the hubs themselves? The 4X4 still works fine. it's only when I get up to a bit of speed around 40-50km that I start to hear the scraping/squeeling....

I would guess the hubs. They are the weakest links. Also cheaper to fix. And if I was doing the fixing, would probably switch to manual hubs.

That's yet another suspicious event related to ProActive. I haven't heard anything nice about them in a year or so. Hmmm.

..having done the same thing accidentaly on my Delica...(my Trooper / Vitara both had shift on the fly engagement)..you most likely just stripped the autolock engagement ratchet...transfercase should be fine, as most damage done there results from high shock load which you didn't experience (according to the brief explanation given)..fear not, a few small (but expensive) parts in the hub later you will be good to go.
I would suggest installing some aftermarket manual lockers as they can be more robust (depends on brand ..but usually around the same cost as a complete hub rebuild) and will eliminate this happening again....although you will lose the comfort of auto lock in winter..brrrrrrrr.

Will probably try to do this replacement myself on a future weekend, sounds like it's pretty straight forward. Just have to find a canadian supplier of manual hubs now...

I've said this elsewhere, manual hubs also give you the option of using the 4 Low gears in 2wd. Good for steep, tricky, but grippy surface backups - in 4 Low when you release the brake you do not roll forward. It's also good for slow creeps like in construction delays on the hwy. etc. Furthermore, with the cab-over delica you are sitting right atop the wheels so you do not need to get of the vehicle to switch the hubs - just open the door. And if you are driving alone, just pop over the centre console into the passenger seat to do that side. Really nice. I'm very happy to have the manual hubs

By ordering the manual hubs and installing them, would they come with all the internal pieces necessary to replace whatever piece I may have broken inside my autos?? Would they be a full replacement kit for internal hub parts?

Yep.

You ditch the whole auto hub and replace with the supplied manual hub.

It comes as a whole assembly. The only piece you need is the C-clip that holds the cv shaft in place and the allen bolts that hold the hub in place.

I'm guessing you don't have a cool-box... because I just can't fathom how I could "just pop over the centre console"

That's true, I don't have a cool box (thankfully ). I am fairly long though (6'5") so, leaving my feet in the driver's well, I lift my butt over the console and kinda half lie across the passanger seat, open the door and reach down to the hub. Maybe a little more of a stretch if your a lot shorter, but still beats getting out and trudging around to the other side
