Anybody have advice on getting rid of a squealing screeching noise?... I can't figure out if it's the belts or something else.
If it is the belt any suggestions on how to get it to stop? Or why it might be screeching like that?
It makes my new van scare people, it's very annoying and holy s**t loud!
My Delica has started screaming.

Re: My Delica has started screaming.
Hey,
I am assuming this noise take place even when you are stopped and seems to come from your butt!(Engine bay!)
This first question is important because if the noise is coming from somewhre else and only when you are driving it makes me think could be a wheel bearing which is a sucky and dangerous noise and said Deli should be taken off the road to be fixed ASAP.
Having said that.
Does is Scream more/less when you turn on/off some electrical stuff?(Heater fan, lights ,big ass stereo ect.) If yes probably alternator belt.
It could be a few things, had a water pump once that made unholy noises for a while before it died (bearing), I was younger then I just turned up the tunes...if the water pump is leaking thats a sign of a pooched bearing, doesn't have to be a huge leak either just right at the pulley.
Could be crapping out tesioner pulleys too.
Take the cover between the engine and rad off. (with the engine tuned off of course) Look at the condition and tension on the belts ,one might be obviously loose. If they are all shiny where they make contact with the pulley that is a telltale sign, its called "glazing" the surface of the belt has become smooth from slipping and melting (also totally wrecked). Can you wiggle any of the pulleys? Not turn them but back and forth,if so they may be loose or hooped(Done).
Throw on a pair of safety glasses which are dirt cheap and you keep in your glove box (right?) and fire up the engine with that cover off and the seat up. You might be able to spot the badness, like a wobbling pulley or dancing belts. Any sucky noises around the timing belt area is pre-warning of pricey after it F**Ks up repairs . Remember also long hair is tied back and you are not wearing loose hanging sleeves or have dangly hoodie/surf sherpa toque strings all waiting to pull you into a 2.5 litre turbo deisel mulcher!
Hopefully this will give you an idea of what it might be so you can fix it or at least know what to tell a mechanic.
What elses makes this sound... anybody?
Good Luck
and Right on!
(will be right on when its fixed I mean)

Re: My Delica has started screaming.
If you have a garage/mechanic you trust even a little bit, take it is for a diagnosis. Chances are a mechanic can diagnose things like wheel bearing, alternator belt, etc. in seconds, and for free. Diagnosing things like timing belt is a little more difficult. Luna-sea's questions are a good start. If you could post the answers to them, all the brainiacs on this forum can help.
But I would suggest you avoid driving until you know what it is -- a timing belt that is screaming now could break in a couple of kms and cost you a new engine.

Re: My Delica has started screaming.
If it screams during acceleration / under load, could be your universal joints and they should be replaced. Worn engine and transmission mounts may contribute to / exacerbate the sound. Let us know what you find out.

best would be to go is take a video (with sound) put it on youtube and post it up on here, then people can see/hear it for themselves.
