Hi guys,
Just got a quick question about a 1990 Delica Exceed. I'm off to look at one for sale near me in about an hour which is a 2.5litre Diesel, but the guy recons it's not a turbo model. I thought all the 2.5diesels were turbos, or am I mistaken?
I had a quick search, but couldn't find anything.
Thanks in advance,
Dave

I am not an expert on the 1990 model, as it changed late 1990. But you need a quick answer so ...
The Delica Starwagon, that is the typical model in Vancouver, as seen in the photos on this website, is turbo diesel. But MANY different versions were made for foreign markets. Ours is the JDM Japanese domestic model. Other versions in other countries are VERY different.
Our model changed in late 1990. The pre 1991 has 2 square headlights separate for high and low beam, on each side. The post 1991 to 1994 has a swoopy european look headlight combined housing for the high and low beams on each side. Our Vin numbers start P35 or P25. Ours are all vans (see our photos of comfy seats that convert to a big bed for camping).
Ours have sliding side door only on the left, the factory camper version is a 2 wheel drive, and often has sliding door on both side. Ours are 4 wheel drive, with turbo. The 2 wheel drive is NOT turbo. The pick up trucks 2 WD are not turbo. Our turbo often have a small oil leak BEHIND the turbo, no problem, just dont want it ahead of the turbo.
I just went out to look at my VIN info plate (drivers seat, left carpet flap between your knees, has full info), says engine 4D56, nothing after it (I hoped to see a T, because I have a turbo), so it must be embedded in the several other codes imprinted on the plate.
Post photos, we will gladly give you opinions.

Re: Do all 2.5 diesels have turbos?
Pre-91 Delica's came with both turbo and non-turbo's.
The 88-90 Delica's that I have seen so far have been without turbo's.
If it's a 5-spd and doesn't have a turbo, then it's not the end of the world.
If it's an auto and doesn't have a turbo, then you will definitely feel the difference driving.
Adding on a turbo to the 4D56 is a very involved process and not just a bolt-on mod.

The serial number plate will say if it's a 4D56 or 4D56T.
The sticker on the back will say Turbo Diesel, as appropriate.
You can climb underneath and see for yourself.

Re: Do all 2.5 diesels have turbos?
Thanks for all the info guys. Super helpful
Just got back from viewing it and unfortunately it wasn't all I had expected. It turned out it was a turbo model - he'd got confused between this one and his other Delica which isnt a turbo.
Unfortunately that was about all that was good on it. It seemed in good mechanical order, but was a bit of a nail, asthetically.
- The rear door was completely caved in to the point where it had a hole through the steel bodywork and the door wouldn't open.
- The sliding door had been kicked in.
- Switches were hanging off the dash.
- Minor dents in every panel
- The deisel pump solenoid was broken so to start it you had to put two bits of wire together to turn on the pump and then pull them apart to stop the engine
Good anti theft if nothing else!
- Oil on the rocker cover and all down the back of the engine case and gearbox
He is going to get the sliding door and rear door replaced though, although the colour will be slightly different apparently.
Delicas are so few and far between though, that I'm half tempted to get it rather than wait another 6 months for another to come up for sale (provided it's checked and found to be good mechanically). Could be a mistake though, I think.

electrical problems can either be a simple fix, or an ongoing nightmare.I personally would rather have mechanical issues. The most popular thing said is to go with your instinct, after reading that, I'd instinctively stay away.

and I am exactly the opposite... and I speak from experience... my last vehicle had nightmare electrical issues I could never track down... The delica on the other hand seems to have a nightmare mechanical issue I can't track down... I find this far more of a problem..I personally would rather have mechanical issues
