Transmission filter?

Does your Mitsubishi L300 make a strange noise? Need wheel alignment specs?

Transmission filter?

Post by mararmeisto »

Quick question for the masses: do these vans have a filter for the ATF in the automatic transmission?

How often should that be changed? With every ATF change? 40000km?

I'd do it at the change intervals. filter/gasket are not expensive and it's simple to do

The part number listed in the wiki is MD609189

Does anyone know if that is what a person would take into Lordco or where ever? Is there a brand that goes with this part number?

I takes about 7 bottles or less from what I recall and I'll check as soon as I am done typing. How ever you need to buy 8-10 as Butch recommend flushing it, as in draining some and add more twice with about 1 month intervals.
The stuff is inexpensive, and the transmission is not!

Checked!
The manual calls for 6.8 total but the drain holds less the half of that. Also I would add a new stronger magnet while you are in there but you might look in to that as that is just my thought...

Hey thanks!

I saw somewhere that Dextron 3 is the right fluid. Sound right?

I just drained and replaced my trany fluid at 2500 KM after a full service at CVI just as a "flush". In my case, only about 2.5 liters came out and the same went in. Dextron III is what was recommended; cost was about $4.00 per liter. I am thinking of doing the same at 10,000 KM; for the $10 it costs it seems worth it.

Thanks! I did the filter change the other night. I can honestly say that it was a beee-atch of a job. Not that it was hard it was just a pain doing it laying under the van and pretty messy, even being careful to drain as much fluid as I could. A hoist or pit would make this job a lot easier. I had never changed the fluid or filter in the 40,000kms that I have driven this van. I am pretty sure that Karim changed the fluid but not sure about the filter. Once I got to the filter and took it out I observed that everything looked pretty good. The bottom of the pan and magnets needed to be cleaned, but everything else looked good. Not saying that you shouldn't change the filter and fluid of coarse, but maybe don't totally panic if you are reading this post and haven't done it for a while.

When I do it again I will likely take it somewhere with the parts and have it done on a hoist or pit. My favorite part was the ATF shower I got when pulling the pan from the dip stick tube...good times :-D .

I just changed my tranny fluid again. This time I also took the pan off and the total fluid volume was about 4 Liters. I also cleaned the screen filter and put it back on (I could not justify replacing it with only 12,000 km on it; It was not very dirty). I also added some additional supper strong magnets. One tip...When you take the filter off, quite a bit more fluid comes out from behind it and it can make a mess; next time I will slowly peal back one corner and let it drain out nicely! :o
