Cheap Deisel

Just wanted people to know about this, the Petro-Can on Marine at Cap Road in NVan sells their deisel about .09 below their gasoline price. Last time I filled up it was .87/L which is pretty darn good.

I tried to look for the old thread about deseil prices but my wording must have been off. Someone posted a way to use google to search this site and that worked really well when I tried it but I forget the syntax used.

Good call, Dfnder. I actually filled up at the PetroCan on Main & Mountain Highway the other night for the same price. Close to the cheapest I have ever paid for diesel in a long time.

You folks that don't live on the rock are lucky, you have this odd concept of COMPETITION going on, in Victoria the price is the same for fuel no matter where you go. For us, it's a matter of whether you get your co-op rebate, airmiles, or whatever other gimmick is in your best interest.

Indeed, gotta take advantage of the good prices these days... who knows how long they're gonna last.

I had placed an earlier post on "where to pump cheap diesel in the lower mainland" a few months back and although there were many explanations etc. (some conflicting ones) that came back, I still don't quite get the politics of diesel-price fixing (or the politics of fuel prices in general for that matter).

I always thought that diesel is a lower grade (i.e. not as refined, cracked and filtered etc.) fuel than gasoline... and therefore it should definitively be cheaper than gas. In Europe many people heat their homes with "light heating oil" which is a very close equivalent to diesel (at least in liquid form smells exactly like diesel) and which - in direct comparison to diesel - is a lot cheaper.

I am convinced that Delica's could burn that heating fuel just as good as diesel (since vegetable oil doesn't seem to be an issue) but I don't suppose you could buy that stuff here in Canada (??).

Does anybody know how diesel fares in terms of longer term storage. Since in Canada a portion of regular gas is ethanol, it tends to loose it's combustion qualities over time and water build-up/condensation can become a problem. Since I have a dirt bike parked in our cabin in the interior (as well as a lawnmower, trimmer, chainsaw, outboard motor and power generator) I always wonder if I am running the risk of not being able to start the machinery up again in the spring after a winter of just sitting....

Every station that sells diesel that I've driven around (lower mainland) are all selling it 8-10 cents cheaper that reg unleaded.

Cool to have, finally, cheap diesel. The reason the diesel is sooooo cheap is because of the drop of the federal tax. I sure like it.:):)

85.9 @ Mohawk by west 3rd and Forbes, N Van last night. That's Diesel Max too. My van seems to run better on that stuff.

It's all oil.

The rest is in the refining. Gasoline is refined to such a degree that it is a solvent, where diesel is an oil. Diesel is known by a number of names that reflect their quality, i.e.; diesel 2 is what is traditionally put into our trucks and has certain lubricants in it that help keep working parts of the engine from wearing out. Diesel 1 is known by many names, such as ~ stove fuel; jet fuel; paraffin; kerosene... Diesel 1 lacks the lubricity of diesel 2. You can use it in your engine but things will wear out if you keep doing so. Diesel has a shelf life and it does go stale. If you have old diesel in your tank the engine should still fire, it just won't run well, i.e; your kilometreage will not be as good. However, I understand that agitation helps this situation but to what degree I know not.
