Exhaust manifold access. Is there an easy way?

Hi guys,

I need to get to my exhaust manifold as the van is making some funny noises and I'm hoping it's a leak between the manifold and case as suggested. The problem is I've found it's pretty inaccessible from underneith or inside the van.

Before I start ripping into things and pulling stuff apart, I thought I best see if there's an easy access point that I've missed. By the looks of things the best bet is to tackle it from above but that means taking off the rocker cover etc to get to it, and even then it looks pretty inaccessible. Is that the only way?

I've pulled the turbo and manifold off a few vans now, and it might take an extra ten min to remove, but I prefer to remove the drivers seat plate, its just bolted down, the hardest part was taking off the linkage of the E brake, and even that was only about 2 min . Others might have an easier solution, but I donate enough knuckle skin and blood to the delica gods on a regular basis , so I prefer a direct shot at the engine when doing major work. I certanly don't have japanese size hands. lol.

So is there a plate under the hand brake as well? Not just under/behind the drivers seat?

I'll give it a nosey and see if I can get in a bit easier.

It's been a long time since I've been skinning my knuckles on a car, so I'm quite looking forward to it! Not the same on a relatively modern car though. I'm used to the added danger of tetenus on my old rusty volkswagons! hehe!

the whole floor under the driver's seat comes off, not just the access panel under/behind the seat.
this plate includes where the seat is attached as well as the metal under the e-brake etc.

This is what it looks like with the plate off:

The plate is attached by roughly seven bolts and three screws? Something like that. You have to take your seat out first (4 bolts). You will also have to detach the e-brake cable and the fuel hatch cable, duct tape works for holding the loose cables out of your way. As I am learning ~ the more you become familiar with this the easier it all appears. Be careful when dealing with the turbo-charger, which is a part of the whole exhaust manifold assembly. It looks simple but I believe it to be a little "tricky", as Garyo once told me. Your engine is the "4D56T".

Ah ha! That's great, cheers guys. I didn't realise the whole lot comes away. That certainly makes things a lot easier!

I'll start tackling it tonight and hopefully get things sorted.

Je suis psycho! You wouldn't believe the crap I had to get off of the turbo, about an eighth of an inch of oil and dirt with a scraper ~ I suspect all of last Summer. There were likely dust samples from all over BC all bound together with what was once 15w40. The only time I use gasoline with my engine.

Say I wanted to rebuild my turbo. (Not that I have the chance of doing that)
Does it simply come off, hand over to a turbo dude and rebolt on or
is it something nasty to do?

Its fairly straight forward to swap a turbo, once you get at it, just make sure you have a new gasket or the old one is in good shape for up against the exhaust manifold, being in Sask, you should probably take the van for a good long drive first so the turbo will be nice and warm on your hands.....(Joking) I lived in PA for a couple years,
if your turbo side is Clean, spray some sort of lubricant on the nuts so they are easier to take off and less likely to snap an old one off. (DONE THAT BEFOR )
take your time and it should be pretty straight forward.
