Toyota HZJ79R

Today I was out by the Richmond Ice center and a friend showed me some very very amazing looking land cruisers. The old BJ body style, but they are BRAND NEW single cab 3 seater with just a frame on the back to do whatever you want. I want all the info I can find on them, wikipedia doesn't really even have much info on these specific ones but I do believe I found the correct model number which is HZJ79R. From what I can tell it is a 4.2L diesel, and it is bare bones. It has 5bolt steel wheels (15x6 I think) with very knobby but narrow "jeep sservice" bridgestone tires that look like 31s but they are very narrow so I guess they might have to be smaller?

here are some pictures... any info anyone could get me on any possible way of picking one of these up would make them my hero.

A mining company had special ordered some in the 90's, all were a generic colour, diesel, basic no frills truck chassis like the ones in your pictures. Maybe a new order was placed. These are not offered to the general public. I believe other countries get them for sale to the general public.

I was thinking mining or military. They have license plate mounts with lights for them, i wonder if they have everything else they need to comply. I need to find one.

I posted one on another forum that was for sale in Whistler from the 90's it had low k's and was the PZJ7 (3B) serries. It sold for a little less than $15,000. It was in great shape. It went to some dude on the Island, looked like he was going to make it into a work truck.

hi, this is not new, i have seen this 2 year ago in th eport they used in mining & other project for governmetn i see crew cab before.
as you can see toyota dont want to bring this as they cannot make money on service.
thats the reason. they need something that always breakdown.

Adam, took a picture in my BC travels in 2007 of a 70 series mine cruiser, same color same but heavily worn tires, with a work box on the back and an Alcan sticker on the door. Sure that was in Kitimat, but haven't found the picture yet.

Having a few mine engineers on Randi's side of the family, heard that Land cruisers are the choice around the world for durability. These discussions came up because; they wanted me to import JDM cruisers as the mine ones are commonly run over 500,000km hard and not insurable on BC roads - ever.

They can't comply, they have been brought in as off-road only and are never allowed to be registered for road use in Canada, even after they turn 15 years old.

Adam, would think the 'powers that be' will inform you those vehicles are un-insurable because they don't have airbags, ABS brakes and immobilizers installed.

Airbags scare me, ABS annoys me and i take my steering wheel with me. I don't really care if someone can start my van, its most likely not going anywhere without a steering wheel. now give me the land cruiser.

I was refering to the old ones when I made this statement about compliance. As BCDelica points out; the new ones that you took pictures of are very unlikely to be able to be complied.

I found this really interesting. So, I contacted a good friend who has been Landy crazy since he was in diapers (owns a 1985 Canadian BJ series and it's Japanese JDM 1985 twin...but with turbo and all other other goodies we never got in Canada!).

He told me that the mines have been bringing them in for years - they are brand new builds, and are most certainly not legal for road use here due to the previously mentioned issues. But, apparently a couple did slip through the cracks somehow back in the 1990's and got licensed. Seems the landy crowd keeps close tabs on these things out of sheer love and devotion. It's primarily USA & Canada where these cannot be purchased for road use - still selling well in Oz for example, and quite a few other countries in Africa & Central / South America so not a big deal for a mining company to place and order since it's not really a special run. Apparently the top of the line version can now have a twin turbo which makes a gob of power. Sigh....but not for us.........

This is true 100%.

Heres how it goes in mining: GM trucks are usually for the surface supervisors/mgmt types (useless, but ride quite nice), Fords are for anything to do with actual work on surface and for anything underground or in the pit, it's a Toyota/landcrusier. Mostly because they have bombproof drivetrains but also because maintenance can usually fab up whatever you need to fix in a jiffy. Simplicity and tough are a pretty badass combo :D
