Lots has been written before on this, I know..... but i wam wondering if anyone has a good resource (diesel Mech) for getting this work done - looked at in Victoria. I dont have the time currently to get the deli up to Glenn at CCAutos.

For stuff like that you really should take it to someone like CCA. I would say that most diesel mechanics could do the work but they will likely charge a lot more than someone that runs their business fixing Delicas. The black smoke can easily be coming from the fact that the timing is out of whack and the valve clearance needs adjustment. Unless your EGR valve is stuck open then it likely is not the source of the smoke.

If you have the correct BCAA then you can get towed up to Coombs for no cost. I have done this twice from Duncan and then went to pick it up.

..no idea why you would want to fix it. The EGR system is used primarily in Japan only.(check other countries such as Austrailia with similar models..the intake has a block plate from the factory where the EGR canister sits) Run a delete plate between the canister and the intake manifold...I used a piece of aluminum sheet...use a pop can or whatever. Remove the 2 -14mm bolts then remove the metal gasket and use it as a template for the delete gasket..just omit the main hole) ...cleaner burning and a little more power than a clogged EGR system, and definately better for the engine. Takes about 20min total for the job. Decided to do mine after the 2nd EGR cleaning job stopped working after a month or two, never looked back. :-D

I've blocked my EGR on one of my van that had smoke issue and bad idling for the 1st 10 min and it made a world of difference for that van. Not the case with every vans depending on what's the initial issue.

One thing though, DON'T use a thin aluminum (pop can) to block your EGR. The heat will heat right through! (It's been documented on the UK forum...) I'd say you need a 1/16" thickness to be on the safe side.

Same advise as DelicaMark for the rest...

Well, a trip to Ellice Automotive here in Victoria, a couple of hours of work, and no more Black smoke of any kind under any condition. new air filter, cleaned out EGR and IP adjustment. Could have done the first two myself, but since they had it there.... This was my first repair - other than oil etc - in one year of operation. Not bad i feel.

It is always better to fix the EGR than to blank it out, many people have reported worse fuel milleage with it blanked out, and it can in fact CAUSE some smoking problems when blanked out too.

While the EGR is there for emissions requirements only, and is technically not required in Canada, you have to keep in mind that the engine was designed and tuned for it to be there, removing it will never give you quite as good performance as if it is working properly (and from what I hear, most of the time a really good cleaning is all they really need)

I just completely removed my EGR on my other van, blocked both ports. Both van run really good without it.

First, my EGR still operated fine.
At first I was tempted to clean it but after opening it and seeing all the dirt (thick black crap) stuck inside and down the air intake towards the turbo I felt that this stuff did and would actually make it inside turbo and engine which in my opinion is worse than blocking the egr. But that's just me (and a few others!)

No right answer, just preferences...

Im blowing lots of black smoke once again, looking through lots of diesel symptoms pages I'v come to the conclusion that it is from a restricted air intake some where, not the air filter because I just replaced that. From what you guys are describing it sounds like I may have a blocked EGR.
Anyone got a pic or a good description of where it is located?
