Virgin Delica Owner

Post by Roodman »

Hi all. I moved out to BC two years ago and saw my first Delica then. I'm changing my work up a bit and going to tour around the province to ride and surf while working from the van. I wasn't sure if I'd do this from my Subaru Forester or a Delica, so I had a dealer bring a Delica out to show me and once I saw it the deal was done.

When moving out here I spent nine months living in a Dodge Roadtrek touring the coastal US windsurfing and surfing the days away....I can't wait to have a little of that life again this summer!

So here's a shot of the van at the auction. It's a '91 Exceed with 55,000km. P25w. I'm not sure if the one I saw was a low roof or the high roof, but either way, I'm pretty excited.

what's interesting is the auction sheet shows a picture of a p35, but the vin number is p25... someone is doing something fishy...

I would imagine it's more likely a typo. but better to check it out anyways.

a typo in the VIN may be minor on an auction sheet, but it becomes a major pain if it makes it on to the bill of sale or export certificate...

A little bit off-topic, but... 1991 and 55000 km... how it can be, I wonder? Van is about 18 years old - but 55000k??? Can`t understand that. It means about 3055 km per year. Is it possible?

Yup. Mine has 24,000 km when I got it in 2007. In the following 12 months I put another 24,000 on it. Some of these Delicas don't get driven much in Japan. Which can be good or bad, depending on whether it drove one 50 km trip each week, or it sat for months at a time.

Can`t understand that. Why one should buy a van and drive it 50 km a week? Or don`t move it for years? But buy shaken & pay for everything? Mysterious japanese?

you have to understand why the japanese have vehicles, it's not for normal use, their cities just aren't built for it, and their public transit really works. Many of them actually have to take public transit just to get to where their vehicle is parked.

These are used for the occasional weekend trip, not for running to the grocery store or communting to work.

beyond that though, a vehicle in Japan is a status symbol, that's also why so many are in such wonderful shape inside and out (but also partly why the mechanical side is often ignored, people don't see that when you show off your ride, and if you aren't driving anyway, it's not important) the important features are things like the kareoke player and the seating space, not for driving, but for sitting in much like a canadian would have a cottage on a lake, or a shed in the yard, it's a place to escape to.

Nakami, You know that both Canada & Russia are a little bit bigger than Japan.... :-D
I think that the mentality of people in bigger countries is to drive further. The Miss Lil' Bitchi ('92 Chamonix) had just under 61,000 kilometres on her when I got her. In the past year I have put an additional 32,000 klics on her. I like to explore. I get the feeling that these trucks were used as secondary vehicles in their previous lives, like going to the cottage on the weekend or to the Hokkaido ski resort, once a year.

There again they are beautiful machines ~ perhaps some of them were worshipped in shrines of sorts.

May be you`re right. When I bought my first one, I was driving about 10000 km a year and now I`m making 30000 km a year. But 1997 had 99000 km. Here in Russia (Vladivostok especially) if you say 1991 van has 55000 km NOBODY belive you.

I've got some new Pics. It's at the importers lot in Japan now.....

That's interesting on the P35w vs 25w stuff, I was having trouble figuring out how this was supposed to be a low roof model. Anyway - pretty excited!! When it gets here I'm going to put a trailer hitch on it (Class 3), a NorthShore Rack, and some kind of Roof rack / roof cage thing. The massive aluminum looking one would be cool, but I might just pickup up a used Thule or Yakima or something to save a few bucks.
