nice site, they might be a little out of the range of what I figure a paint job should cost...Meanman wrote:I have a good friend is the owner of 360 fabrications inc in Abbotsford, near the tradex, They do top notch work. His name is Rick...good guy...tell him James from Deeley's sent you.

Re: Anyone work at a paint/body shop?
I assume around a $800-$1000 if it is a decent repaint (not changing colour so no inner door jams etc need to be done).Kei King wrote:What should a paint job cost?

I don't even think Maaco would touch it for that price.

Re: Anyone work at a paint/body shop?
Hey. I work at a custom paint shop. juscuzcustoms.com . Yes Maco will do it cheap but you get what you pay for. We had a customer that wanted a repaint, former maco paint, we stripped the car with the preasure washer. No joke! The diference in cost is the prep before paint. A proper paint job meens pulling windows, door handles. and any other part that will cause a paint line to build up. A paint line will be a problem down the road and look like a back yard job. We would charge in the 6-8 grand mark.

Re: Anyone work at a paint/body shop?
Andrew,
I just called a buddy of mine who paints cars at his shop. He knows what a Delica is ( he's seen mine) He says JUST the cost of paint/clearcoat would run in the area of 550 dollars ( including hardener). He told me for a decent repaint on my van, would probably run between 2500-3500, and majority of the cost is the prepwork. That would include minimal body work ( a few door dings) feathering out the rock chips up front. The actual time to paint it would be no more than 3-4 hours. Dont forget, you have 2 colors and a clear coat (unless your van is a single color)
Cheers

Re: Anyone work at a paint/body shop?
What if you have a couple of replacement panels to go on (from a wrecked vehicle, so wrong color), so pretty much just drop them off and let them get done when they get done... anyone got any suggestions?

Re: Anyone work at a paint/body shop?
Hi Andrew,
What is wrong with your paint job? Is the clear coat broken anywhere? If it has just gone cloudy then it can be retrieved by a detail shop that is using the industrial strength paint renovators. An exterior detail will cost you around $325.00; a proper paint job will cost you more like $2,500.00. Also, if you do go with the paint job, be sure that you get the solvent based paint and NOT the water borne paint. The water borne paint is okay if you are merely driving it around town but if you take your vehicle down a logging road the water borne paint will not stand up and you will be painting it again.
One solid colour is cheaper than a base coat/clear coat system. My van has a green pearl in the clear coat ~that costs more again. A good paint job is worth the money as a cheap paint job is generally a false economy ~ which reminds me of a story:
There was this guy who got laid off from his job (probably at GM or somewhere) so he took up painting. He bought a paint brush, a paint roller and three gallons of latex (pea green; salmon pink; ivory yellow). He put all his tools and paint into a wagon and went around the neighbourhood, knocking on doors. Eventually he came to an house, knocked and the occupant opened the door.
So off around the back went the painter and the house owner went about his business. Three hours went by when the painter was knocking at the door again:
Choose your painter wisely, once the paint is on your car ~ it is on ~ and the top coat is only as good as the paint underneath it.
Falco.

- "Hello sir, I am a painter and I was wondering if you needed anything painted around the house?", he asked.
"Why yes" replied the house owner, "I have a porch in the back that needs painting".
"Great!" said the painter, "What colour would you like it ~ I have pea green, salmon pink or ivory yellow?"
"Oh, salmon pink sounds nice!" replied the owner...
So off around the back went the painter and the house owner went about his business. Three hours went by when the painter was knocking at the door again:
- "All done?" asked the owner.
"Yes sir!" replied the painter.
"Great! I can't wait to see it" commented the owner, "How much do I owe you?"
"$86.37 cents" replied the painter ~ "oh, and it's not called a porch, it's called a lamborghini."
Choose your painter wisely, once the paint is on your car ~ it is on ~ and the top coat is only as good as the paint underneath it.

Re: Anyone work at a paint/body shop?
Ya I am well aware of what I will get for the 5-600 range at maaco...
the vehicle is a landcruiser VX limited and it is all one colour. I assume it has close to the same surface area if not a little less then a deli as it has very large windows and it not as tall.
I will take it to a few reputable places and see what they say. Thanks guys
PS. what I was hoping for was someone was in the paint business and they wanted a veggie kit installed on there deli...

I worked at a detail shop, and we had work sent to us and vice versa with a good(but fairly affordable) body shop. I'd say a good paint job on a deli would cost you about 1500-2k with jambs and all.

Something I am in the market for, sometime before next winter, is a touchup on Gumdrop's roof to fill in the scrapes from height barriers. Preferably something really durable (epoxy?), to minimize further scrapes.
