What are the differences... questions from a Newby.

Post by whileonearth »

What are the different features amongst the Delicas?
  • Royal Exceed
    Super Exceed
    Exceed
    Chamonix
    Space Gear
    Star Wagon
...and any other types I may have left out.

I have been looking for 'the' Delica that will adequately replace my current vehicle - 1987 VW Vanagon Syncro Camper - and there appears to be a blend of snake oil and uncertainty in the write ups.

Do all Delicas have a limited slip differential? If not, which ones have them?

Are there any types of seats to avoid if I plan on sleeping on a comfortable sleeping surface? It looks like the mid seats of some Delicas are benches (3rd seat folds to wall), and some have 'captain' chairs.

Manual vs Automatic:
In my experience, manual is the better choice when it comes to 4x4 vehicles, especially when a Differential is available. There are a lot of Delicas with lift kits and oversize tires - how does this add to the wear and tear on the drive train?

It seems that all of the Delicas that come close to being what I'm looking for, are Automatic, and I'd just like to get some feedback on what you all have to say. From a Dealers point of view, the van does what I want it to do, no matter what, but just as with the fuel question, Sales answers differ from Actual results.

If anybody has recommendations of what to look for and what to avoid please let me know. (helpful answers are appreciated over the 'don't eat yellow snow' type.) I will be using it to drive to remote locations for camping, hiking and whatever adventuring I'm up for at the time. My Syncro serves me very well, but I really like the look of the Delica.

It seems LSD was an option for most models, so you'll have to enquire about each van individually to find out if it has it.

If you are sleeping in the Deli alone, there's no downside to the captain's chairs. You can recline all of the seats and have a very comfy sleep. If there is more than one of you, then the double bench makes a better bed as there will be no gap at the front end. Many people add an air mattress over the reclined captains seats to level the surface and cover the gap.
Exceed and Super Exceed have captains chairs; Chamonix, Jasper, and GLX have bench.

Unlike most vehicles, Delicas get better highway milage with an automatic due to the higher gearing. Still, some people just prefer to drive manual.

All the best with your search. Delica's are very fun and practical vehicles. :-D

Hi WOE,

Please complete your online profile, it is impossible to answer your questions without knowing what country you are in, and your interests.

In Canada, don't have Royal. Space Wagon is the L300 which we have, Space Gear is the L400 which are just barely arriving so most of us have never seen one. For L300 first choose your height (low or high roof -- ie where will you park or drive), then choose your middle seat (captains or bench --- kids?? camping??); Chamonix is the bench version, others have captains. The rest will be determined after that.

The easiest thing is for you to set up a mini meet so you can see a bunch including modifications, and ask everyone's preferences.

Anyone is welcome to organize a meet, just post a time and place (fast food places with washrooms and large parking lots are good), offer cookies and they will arrive.

Only buy from reputable people.

Cheers, Christine.

I'm sure Christine meant "Star Wagon".

This is a Space Wagon:
