Squeak from front end
Let's play determine the squeaking noise.
It happens only when the steering is cranked all the way over to left or right. This happened to me the other day and is a short length squeak. very quick and sharp.
Situation: 3 point turn using a driveway
Pulling into the driveway with wheel cranked to the left. front right tire hits first and squeaking noise occurs on the right side only.
Reversing out of the driveway with wheel cranked to the right. Front left tire drops first and squeaking occurs on the left side only.
My sway bar bushings need replacing badly and that may be the cause as the rubber is basically plastic but any other ideas.

Re: Squeak from front end
I place my wager on the power steering. If you are hearing it only when your wheel is turned to extremes then that would likely be it. She (your van) could be telling you that she wants a new belt before too long.
Apart from that I just had an issue with my front right brake calliper, but that was while driving in a straight line. It turned out to be rust on the calliper pin, no big deal, just annoying. Cleaned it and greased it ~ badda bing, badda boom ~ Robert's yer uncle, Fanny's yer aunt and all is ship shape & Bristol fashion.

Re: Squeak from front end
Well, I'm definitely thinking its not the power steering. That's more of a whininning sound when that is angry.
Replaced my tranny mount this weekend and poked around the front end looking for any scoring to make sure the squeaking is not comming from any metal-on-metal interference. Couldn't find anything so thats releaving. Gotta replace the stabilizer bar bushings but wont get to that for another week or 2. hopefully that resolves this issue.

Re: Squeak from front end
I found this interference the other day crawling around underneath the truck. The pic is a little blurry. The pic is taken from the front right side of the truck. You can see the lower ball joint, sway bar bushings, tierod front right tire etc.
The rusty color in the middle is located on the hard stop for the steering knuckle. just to the left is a bolt and metal bushing? used to come into contact with the hardstop.
It would seem that this is causing my squeaking noise.
Obviously I can't take it off. I don't have the tools to modify the hardstop to make it vertical contact instead of arching contact and don't think that is the correct solution either.
Should I replace the bolt with a heavy duty rubber stop
Should I clean up the contact faces and grease it a little?
Any other solutions?? I'm all ears cause come time for camping this will be squeaking alot.

Re: Squeak from front end
I follow that for most sounds like a rattly muffler but when it comes to something as important as my steering mechanisms I'm gonna figure out a way to fix it.

I recommend Glen & the Lads at CC Autos. They declunked ours, after many others had tried. Cheers, Christine.

Re: Squeak from front end
i also just noticed a squeak, but mine sounds more behind the driver. now im not totally sure, it could just be all the shit back there trying to break free (spare tires, skate and down hill skis and polls, box speaker). When doing the EGR the other day I checked the steering fluid level, and it looked pretty low, would topping that off stop a squeak?

Re: Squeak from front end
strada-caster, this is a common squeak from many Japanese 4x4s. From the factory there is a hard plastic cover over the bolt that eventually wears out and then rubs metel on metal when turned hard and then over a bump. I have never heard of someone replacing it. You may want to try a Toyota or Nissan dealer as thay are the same style. All I do is apply some grease to both sides when I hear it and it's good for a few months before I hear it again. There is nothing that will break or fall off it just gets annoying once in a while.
Hope this helps.

kidwrecked,
thanks very much for the message. I had thought of putting ome grease on it but hadn't done it just yet. I'll give it a go since there seems to be no other logical solution except for possible replacement.

Hi,
My Strada also had this noise.Just put grease on the stopper,(knuckle and lower arm)every time you do a maintenance.
The Strada of my cousin was also making the same noise. And we also put grease on it.

Re: Squeak from front end
I just wanted to mention that I too had a pretty loud squeaking noise coming from myfeont left on my L400. I had a look underneath today and saw two rubbery looking stops on the top and bottom arms. I greased all 4 (both left and right sides while I was at it) and it seems to have resolved the problem. If anyone would like to see pics let me know and I'll throw some up over the weekend.
Thanks for the heads up guys.
