I think my Deli just died...

Hi

Took my Delica for an oil change a few days ago and they told me the Turbo was leaking... nothing else.

This weekend we went for a small trip from Calgary to Drumheller and back (less than 400 kms) and this morning I started to car and I noticed a strange noise coming from underneath, like something was loose. Left it running and cheked under the van and saw that there was a belt and something else outta place. (See pic) Turned off the engine and a couple of mins later I decided to try again but the noise was worst and different, maybe the engine this time: something like when the car is already running and you try to start it again... grinding sound. Turned it off immediately.

What do you guys/gals think about this? Somehow it reminds me of something that happen to Green1 a while ago, I'm trying not to be pesimistic, but I have a bad feeling about this.

Van is in the garage right now, that's the only good news, because I have the day off and I was thinking about taking my kids to Banff, but that ain't happening now.

If I could diagnose a problem online or over the phone I'd be a millionaire. By the look of the picture those are the drive belts for the alternator and water pump. I would take off the belts and make sure the alternator is spinning free. It sounds like you've blown and alt bearing. If it is a water pump bearing then it would be leaking coolant. You could even check the AC compressor for bearing noise.

Check the crankshaft pulley bolt and the crankshaft pulley. They've been know to come loose and cause problems.
If it's bad, then the keyway is probably stripped

I can't see from this angle, but if those are the alternator/water pump belts than I would say you should make sure those devices spin properly, and then get new belts installed and tensioned correctly, could easily solve everything if it's a simple matter of a loose belt coming off.

If those are more like the timing belt or something... then I'm afraid it's not good news.

Pull the plastic top radiator covers off, then the top half plastic cover for the timing belt.

Take a picture from above and check which belts are broken or off.

Also check the smaller timing belt in behind the lower plastic timing cover.

If it's just the alternator and/or power steering belts, you're lucky.

I would take the belts off and check the crankshaft pulley for play. Almost happened to me and just caught it in time.

It was only noticeable from outside when it was running. Kind of like an exhaust leak with a bit of growling and grinding type sound.

One thing I remember when I was trying to find the source of the initial noise is that looking under from the front of the van, I noticed that there was a fan not moving, and I was wondering if that fan was supposed to move or not.

I am going to investigate a little more tonight and take more pics hoping you guys can give me more advice.

Thx for all the answers. I have some hope now, but I know this is going to be expensive one way or the other.

the smaller black electric fan you can see from the outside/front is the AC fan and comes on as needed by the AC system.
